Kuprin writes of the Maslenitsa week:
"...[ Moscow ] eats pancakes hot, as fire, eats them with butter, with sour cream, with caviar [he lists SIX types of caviar], with salt fish of all sorts, [next he lists ELEVEN kinds of other fishy goodies including milt]. Eats with simple folding in and with creative combinations."
As you might expect, the next paragraph describes all the drinks that make these goodies go down!
Which is lovely and spectacular, but perhaps for our purposes we'll tone down the fishiness ... Caviar and sour cream, of course, will be had! But also jams, sauces, honey, fruits, and sweet cheeses. Blinchiki, sirniki, latkes ... Anything else? Sure! Bread, spreads, cheese, veggies and dip. Whatever you want to eat. Even though pancakes are the most important thing.
Eat pancakes, drink tea or something stronger, listen to Russian music, watch Russian movies, socialize, and relax through the afternoon. Last party was so much fun! Russians know how to party. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, brought so much good food, helped to set things up and keep everything running smoothly, and kept smiling (and singing, and eating, and drinking, and dancing)! I hope you can make it to our group Maslenitsa!
I'd kindly appreciate your RSVP. You're welcome to bring friends, and kids - please give me a heads-up if kids are coming so I can be sure to set up a room for them w/ kids' DVDs. Please indicate on your RSVP what goodies you're planning to bring so we have some idea of what's coming and what we still need.
Spasibo, do vstrechi!
