Campus Progressive Meeting - Notes 10/8/03, Zahra

Attendance: Carl, Connie, Gene, Brenda, Michelle, Ethan, Neil, Tania, Damian, Dewey, Jaime, Zahra, Emily, and Mike

1. Mike proposed we host a debate over the situation in Iraq, possibly between either student or faculty representatives provided by the College Republicans and ourselves.

2. The Long Beach Civil Liberties Defense Coalition
a. is hosting a forum:
Saturday, October 11, 2003
9 am to noon
Long Beach City College
Dyer Hall, Room FF107
b. Circulating petitions calling for an amendment to Patriot Act
c. Next week we will discuss whether or not it is a good idea to endorse the October 22nd rally with the Civil Liberties Defense Coalition. Concerns include any legal implications there may be as a result of endorsement, there are rumors that this can be a pretty militant event. Bring any thoughts, questions, concerns, etc. to the next meeting!

3. We will be tabling at the Multicultural Festival’s Peace Day ~> November 18th. We will do signups next week.

4. Both the Campus Progressives and the Peter Carr Peace Center will cosponsor National Affirmative Action Day with the campus chapter of the NAACP.

5. If you would like to be a poll worker on campus for the March Primaries, contact Damian (dcola@csulb.edu).

6. Aida Porteneuve (AidaPa@yahoo.com) brought by a few films about the Palestinian crisis. Tania, Damian, and I have taken one each home with us to check out. We will discuss whether we would like to do a screening of them, next week.

7. ANSWER is hosting Stephen Funk’s mother on Saturday, October 18th. Stephen Funk is an openly gay 21-year-old. He is currently serving time for refusing to fight in the war in Iraq. For more information visit www.answerla.org

8. Colectividades 2003 November 7th-9th in Hermosillo, Son, Mexico Workshops and Speakers. For more information contact colectividades2003@greenbicycle.net

9. Since all of us are not able to make it to the recycling center, YOU CAN BRING ANY RECYCLABLES YOU MAY HAVE TO THE NEXT MEETING!!!

10. While we have yet to decide if we will endorse the October 22 rally, we will be carpooling to it. The plan is to leave campus by no later than 1 p.m. on what happens to be a Wednesday. Mind you this is important, the progressive students at CSULB need to get out there and network with other progressive groups. If you would be interested in coming or have any questions, please email me directly at ZBILLOO@csulb.edu, not the entire list.

11. I ran into Hector Flores (La Raza) on Thursday, and he asked that I remind you not to cross picket lines this weekend. The three stores being targeted are Albertsons, Ralphs, and Vons. Workers will not be picketing at all three stores, just one. So if you see people picketing please respect that and do not cross the lines. If there was ever a time to shop at a non-union store, this is it!

12. Yay for Tania and Neil who I believe had planned to get STEP certified! A couple more days, and hopefully we will be planning our first event.

Have a good weekend and I will see you next week,
Zahra
