1. Film Fest - still going on for March. Tomorrow, Thursday, March 23rd at 6pm in the Multi-Cultural Center (MCC), FO3-03, "LIFE AND DEBT," about structural policies imposed by IMF (Intl Monetary Fund) and World Bank on Jamaica for debt 'relief,' negatively affecting their economy, industry, govt, and culture. go Neo-liberalism! 2. Watershed Expo - Sat, Mar 25th, 10a-5p - Hermosa Beach Community Center - "...a free interactive learning experience on the importance of watersheds, offering information and educational entertainment for all ages and interests. Join us at the Hermosa Beach Community Center in Hermosa Beach on March 25 to learn how you can keep our rivers and oceans cleaner" (from Algalita Research Foundation at http://www.algalita.org/watershed-expo.html). contact member Jasmine at jasmineboerner@yahoo.com.
3. Reclaim Democracy is a non-profit organization exposing corporate crimes, our corrupt democracy by corporations' influence on govt. Sean B would like to bring a speaker to campus sometime soon. the Campus Progressives moved to fully endorse any event produced for this. see www.reclaimdemocracy.org and Sean B at --
4. Darfur Action League update: last week, SUCCESS with UC divestment - UCs move to pull substantial financial investments out of companies indirectly involved with perpetuating genocide in Darfur, Sudan, Africa which is happening now. the next DAL meeting will be Tues, Mar 28th, 3pm. 5. 3rd Anniversay Iraq War event - Muslim Student Association (MSA) hosting an event for "3rd Anniversary of an Illegal Invasion" happening TOMORROW, Thurs, Mar 23rd, 12p at Friendship Walk with guest speakers Preston Wood of the ANSWER LA coalition and Jerry Quickley, host of KPFK's "Beneath the Surface." the Campus Progressives agreed to endorse this event. 6. Our Constitution - a long nagging issue has been to review and revise our group's Constitution and bylaws, which are outdated and fail to meet the group's PROGRESSIVE needs and activities. Member Steven will head the organizing necessary to get all active members to meet to iron out new Consitution and bylaws. we need structure, people!
7. Campus Progressives tabling will take place in front of MultiCultural Center tomorrow, Thurs, 10a-3p. Campus Progressives-endorsed ASI candidates will provide their election platforms. other general literature related to Progressive issues (Puvungna, the Reclaiming Democracy organization) will also be there. all welcome to come table or to provide other materials for distribution from 10a-3p. contact xochitl at xhernand@csulb.edu FMI.
8. Protest Memoirs of a Geisha tonight at 730p before 8pm screening of Memoirs of a Geisha with the Asian and Asian American Studies Coalition in the Beach Auditorium (AAASC), 1st fl USU. perpetuating racist and sexist constructions of Japanese culture and women, the film also furthers the myth that all Asians look the same so must be the same, as some of the main Japanese characters are played by Chinese actresses/actors. say No to today's minstrel shows! 9. March 25th 10am - HUGE action in LA against HR 4437, racist legislation that will criminalize immigrant communites and those who come into contact with them. Say Yes to legalization, to keeping families together, to housing and jobs. Sat, Mar 25th, Campus Progressives and La Raza contingent forming now to carpool to Broadway and Olympic in downtown LA (march to City Hall). 10. Anti-sweatshop student movement on campus - a campus anti-sweatshop policy enacted some time ago has a loophole that does not prevent ASI funds from going toward off-campus purchases of sweatshop made clothing and other items. What can we do? regroup for anti-sweatshop action! please express interest through our Discussions list.
11. Action Committee - we have planned for a day in the first week of April an action surrounding war. serious participants needed. please contact james at james_yamanoha@hotmail.com FMI. for your eyes only. Next meeting is Monday in Asian Pacific Resource Center FO4-277 at 2pm.
12. Update on Kaleidoscope zine - thanks to everyone who has submitted to me their zine page idea. again, the Kaleidoscope fundraiser zine will be a Campus Progressives and FORCE informational and creative did-it-ourselves booklet for everyone! what the heck am i talking about? e-mail at bec248@gmail.com. deadline for zine page submissions March 31st.
