Campus Progressive Meeting - Notes 15 March 2006, Michael

This is my first meeting and my first time taking notes so a couple of things are lacking, hopefully you can fill them in. I don't know many of the members' name so please place the names for those heading various project, if needed.

1. On March 21st there will be a protest denouncing HR4437, which is legislation to create along the US Mexico boarder. It will take place on Olympic and Broadway at 10:00 for all those interested,

2. Puvunga. ASI recently passed two resolution in consideration of Puvunga site stating that the land ought to be protected and encouraging open discussion of the site. Despite these it has been generally understood that the building of dorms is to be undertaken. Many at the meeting expresses a wish to mobilize a student awareness campaign: including speaking in classes, tabling and flyering. Effort should be made to contact the anthropology dept and sociology department and those other that would naturally be sympathetic to the issue. It was also agreed that a list of speaking points should be created so that those students that desire to speak in classes would have the appropriate information,

3. Dream Act.
1. Eliminate a federal provision that discourages states from providing in-state tuition without regard to immigration status
2. Permit some immigrant students who have grown up in the US to apply for temporary legal status and eventually obtain permanent status and become eligible for citizenship if they meet certain criteria. This will help many undocumented student who have been in the U.S. since early childhood obtain an education and take the boards and exams for various professions allowing them to work in the U.S. For more information contact Edna Montano Outreach Committee Chair emontano@istillhaveadream.org

4.OC anti-war march
Sign making will take place Friday at 5pm in the la raza resource room F04 2nd floor, and the march is Saturday at 12pm at Hart Park off the 22 fwy.

5. Reclaim Democracy
This is an organization to bring greater awareness about the activities of corporation. There was a wish expressed to bring the director of the local Chapter on campus to give a talk. for more information www.reclaimdemocracy.com

6. ASI Canidate Forum
Progressives are having a an event platform next Monday from 12-2pm in the multicultural center. Publicity is being made for this event and other candidates are being envited to speak.

There was a vote for an official endorsement of the progressive candidates where all but one (Sean) were approved immediately and the official endorsement documents signed. There was a discussion toward the end of the meeting about the candidate still pending approval, arguments were presented by the candidate and the one opposing but no resolution or vote had been established by the end of the meeting.

7. UC reagents Voting for the Divestment from the Sudan will take place at UCLA at 5pm Thursday. Those wishing to carpool or for more info call Peter at 805 705 1450

8.WCW street theater to protest the war and the actions of Bush were discussed and and interest was expressed to begin the project.
