Campus Progressive Meeting - Notes 02 March 2005, Jeb

Ok, I hate taking meeting notes. This is a well known fact but I did it again today.
Also congrats to elisa and everyone else who has worked so hard for the progressives this semester. Elisa is finnishing up her grad school but she has another year here doing her credentials (does she want to teach high school or something? wtf) and she is running for student senator. So we have two progressives running campaigns this semester. Are we going to see Elisa's name on signs all over campus?? what will happen next?? Progressives running the world??

March 2nd, 2005 - Campus Progressive Collective Meeting Notes
******************************************************************

Meeting start at aprox 5:05 PM.
Facilitator: Elisa H.
Note taker: Jeb S.

1. 16 People were in attendance!!! Most people showed up late! slackers! In attendance: Jeb, Elisa, Chris, Mekonnen, Adam, Bob Brophy, Lamya, Andrea, Andrew, Laura, Alten, Nick, Kris + 3 late comers. Lots of new people!! allision totally flaked out and didn't come to the meaning. But we did see her yelling out loud about the Israeli occupation of Palestine in the bottom of the student union. many people were stairing at "the girl yelling". It was great.

2. Bob Brophy- discussed an army resister being brought to campus. His name is Aiden. Lamya will work with him to get him to either speak at Iraqi war event on March 16th @ 5pm. or we will have him speak at the multiculture center from 2-4pm on march 16th. stay tuned for details.. If our fellow progressive mike is back from panama then we hope he will speak. Bob Brophy has been organizing on campus since the 1970's and it was an honor to have him make it out to our meeting and impart his knowledge upon us. He called the campus progressives his "family on campus". And that made me think how much like a family we really are. We have accomplished alot and made great life-long friends in the meantime.

3. fliers- Chris provided 3 fliers. we decided that one of them we really liked! thanks Chris for your great art work !!! We look forward to seeing more art that you produce.

4. Tshirts- debbie nor Jaime were here. We are hoping they are going forward with making the tshirts. hopefully we'll have them done in the next 3-4 weeks...

5. March 19th Anniversary of the War event- lamya talked about it. progressives will help flier and promote.

6. Congo/Rawanda event- lamya is working on this event. (she is doing ALOT this semester!u go girl..uhh did i just say you go girl.. argh)

7. Team Uduak (this is a new popular organization formed this morning at 10am!~!!!! students across long beach are clammerin to join.) I spoke about this for a short time. If you want to join the email list for Uduak's street team for the 05' ASI president campaign then let me know. email me at jebbathehut@hotmail.com GO UDUAK!

8. Andrea came to discuss (i forget the name of her group). It is an activist/union group working to put pressure on schools to change their construction contracts/specs so that they spend more money on building propoarly constructed buildings and not using poor building material/plans/etc. Progressives support this issue. Often contractors submit the lowest bid and then cut corners. When buildings are built they should be built well and with all the materials/specs needed. No shoddy work on campus!

9. Rec Center- This campaign continues. some members of the anti-rec center coalition spoke out again today at the student senate. We have done so for the last 3 weeks in a row... student senators remained quiet on the issue (or should I say spineless?) while Vice President Joliff continued to pull the strings on the rec center debate by not even allowing it to take place (can anyone say CENSORSHIP?). Hopefully if Elisa, Uduak, and other friends get into government positions on campus next year- then this will change. Stduents need to stand up for what they believe- not be scared of "hurting friendly relations" with those more conservative minded groups and senators on campus. We need to organize people. This is a Civic Revolution that is coming to our school.

10. Next Wednesday the CSULB STUDENT COALITION TO STOP THE REC CENTER will be tabeling at campus. We be near the 49er statue(upper campus) and by their from around 12-5pm. Progressive along with members of La Raza, MSA and others are asked to come out and help man the table.

Meeting ended aprox 6:40pm. -jeb sprague
