- DEBATE Jose from the Political Science Student Assoc (PSSA) approached us about participating in a debate against the College Republicans about the upcoming election. As a a group, we consented and info is forthcoming. Contact: Jose Ramos @ jramos10@csulb.edu

-FILM ISSUES
Shelena McClinton from the Long Beach State Democrats (a newly formed group that just started this semester) stopped by for our meeting. They will be organizing a screening of Fahrenheit 9/11 on Oct 20 around 6pm at the Beach Auditorium with a possible Q& A portion afterwards. We agreed to co-sponsor....For info, contact Shelena at shel567@hotmail.com

-Democracy 911! is a weekly film series currently providing screening of progressive, radical films on Monday evenings 6pm, in a small room, FA1-206.
9/27: "Uncovered: The whole Turth about the War in Iraq"
10/4 "Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11 @ the Fear & Selling of American Empire

They are being sponsored by the Women's Studies Dept. and Uduak approached Prof. Liz Phillipose about the possibility of bringing the films to a wider audience via the Beach Auditorium in the USU, and about us co-sponsoring it. More info forthcoming.

-Udauk is heading up the project of bringing the film, "the 4th World War" on to campus. The 5pm & 8pm screenings on Nov.8 will be the Los Angeles area PREMIERE of the film, and will be advertised on KPFK 90.7fm, alternative public radio. This will cost us $500. While the ASI PRogram Council agreed to pay $250 to bring the film here, we have to supply the other half, $250, and so we are brainstorming ideas for donations... For more info on the film, go to www.loudnoise.com

-We had talked about compiling clips of the Daily Show to screen, to bring humor to our scary political reality. Jason contacted relevant authorities, but doubts we will have authorization since the show is a subsidiary of MTV, etc. etc.

TABLING
-Thanks for everyone who tabled on Monday 9/13. We had lots of people drop by our joint table, shared with the Peter Carr Peace Center & Long Beach Peace Action Network literature...

ENVIRONMENT!
-The newly formed Environmental Science & Policy Club (formed last semester) are a bunch of students working to address local environmental issues and supporting local projects. Allison and I dropped by their first meeting last week and they are an organized & committed bunch. Finally, something for us tree-huggers. For more info: contact Mayra Garcia @ treebear@mac.com

-OTHER DUBIOUS STUFF
Infiltration. Subversion. If you want to know what I mean, come to our meetings.

House-Keeping, Reminders
(details, it's all about the details)

-We have office space this year! Come to Cubicle #20 in the Maxson Center on the 3rd floor of the Student Union (open mon-Thurs. 9am -8pm & 9am-5pm on Fridays) to store Progressives office supplies, propaganda, leave messages, etc.
sidenote: The LBSU Democrats & the College Republicans are also among the other 3 dozen student org.'s also housed in the Maxson Ctr. oh the irony.

-We (Elisa and I) are currently trying to find a way to begin 2 separate listserves for this group. One list would be for high-volume traffic (i.e. articles, commentary, personal rants & raves, the nuts & bolts of everyday organizing of the Progressives, & other nitty-gritty details). The other would be reserved for ON-CAMPUS events & the occassional weekly Meeting Notes ONLY (for those only mildly concerned with the Progressives).
You will then have a choice which list you want to belong.

-Until then, PLEASE KEEP MAIL to a MINIMUM. Be respectful of our collective email space and respond to the individual sender instead of the entire list if possible.

-All our decisions are made based on group consensus. Only group members present at the meeting when the decision takes place can have a say on that particular decision. We are a non-hierarchal, nonsectarian activist group with "radical" roots. Membership is open to anyone at CSULB and there are NO FEES to join. Our faculty advisor is PRof. Sherna Gluck of the History Dept. For more info on our procedures, our history, mission statement etc. visit our website at www.csulb.org/csulbcp (courtesy of Elisa!)

For comments/questions, OR IF you feel you have been signed onto this listserve in error, please email me back individually.

Ok people. That's it; I'm never taking notes again.
Have an awesome semester,
Connie
