Campus Progressive Meeting - Notes 08 September 2004, Elisa
Attendance: Adrian, Aja, Amanda, Blake, Connie, Elisa, Jason, Jeb, Kenny, Lamya, Marc, Pascale, Richard, Tommy, Yehuda
Facilitator: Jeb, the media whore
Minutes: Elisa, oh, just a regular whore
Jeb briefly reviewed our organization structure and meeting procedure. To summarize: we have no president or officers, everyone has equal status in the group. Meetings are conducted by a volunteer facilitator which changes week-to-week. Another volunteer takes minutes and sends them to the listserv. Although there are no official leadership positions, all attendees are welcome to take initiative in being a facilitator or heading up an event idea. Although I can’t express it as eloquently as he, Yehuda explained that the leadership experience and knowledge you draw from the group depends on how much you decide to invest in participation. That’s about it...
Issues in chronological order:
Candlelight Peace Vigil in Belmont Shores – Friday, 10 September
The Long Beach Area Peace Network (LBAPN) continues its Friday night peace vigils on 2nd Street in Long Beach in front of the Washington Mutual (corner of 2nd and Nieto). This Friday marks not only the soldiers’ death toll reaching (and surpassing) 1000, but also the tens of thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths that are largely ignored in the American media. Event goes from 7-9pm.
Tabling Opportunity – Monday, 13 September
Amanda spoke with Eugene Ruyle of the Peter Carr Peace Center at CSULB about joint-tabling for peace and outreach. She is arranging for a table and scheduling volunteers. If you wrote your name on the volunteer list, expect an e-mail from her soon. The table will be in the area between LA5, FO2, & FO3.
The Need for Regime Change – 7 October
Elisa designed a flyer for the Preston Wood speaker event against the current presidential regime. Once Zahra approves it through SLD, we have full, unadulterated clearance for our event. Don’t be afraid to ask your teachers to offer extra credit for students who attend the event. Flyer will be available online soon.
More Ideas for Future Events
Voter registration and tabling with information on candidate information. Aja and Richard are putting together a “checklist” or comparison sheet of candidates’ stands on the issues. They will bring the pamphlet to a future meeting for approval.
Guest speakers and seminar talks. We hope to host speakers on issues such as the presidential election, PATRIOT Acts, Haiti & Venezuela coups, gay & lesbian rights, environment & local wetlands development, corporate greed and Bush’s slashing of the Small Business Administration, Coalition Against Slaving and Trafficking (CAST), and any other progressive concerns. Richard is going to contact CSULB professors. Lamya will contact ANSWER. Someone (Jeb?) will contact the instructors and students who recently went to Cuba.
Connie is contacting a student starting up a campus environmental club. She’ll report back with more details.
More suggestions for film/documentary screenings include Supersize Me, Underground, Fog of War. In addition to our film screenings, Jason suggested splicing together clips from The Daily Show in 30-minute bursts to inject some humor into the very depressing and tragic situations at home and abroad. He will investigate the procedure for obtaining clips from the show.
Elisa will contact the Daily 49er and Union for adding our meetings and events to the publications’ calendar sections.
Marc volunteered to work on designing our very own CSULB Campus Progressives t-shirts. He also can arrange for us to sell t-shirts he designed as a fundraising opportunity. More to come.
The meeting had a good run, with lots of great new people and lots of wonderful new ideas. See you next week.
