Campus Progressives Meeting
2/19/02

Last Night’s meeting was well attended and pretty good. It consisted mostly of
updates. Here are the notes:

Attended by: Nina, Bjorn, Sheila, Uduak, Ed, Candace, Carl, Jayme, Shawn, Neil,
Darren, Mary, Marc, Conrad, and please forgive me if I forgot you!! J

1. There is a possible showing of the documentary film "The Hidden Wars of Desert
Storm" in the works... We are going to contact the peter carr Peace Center on
campus to inquire about their plans to show it and maybe we will sponsor it, if
not, we might show it and ask for their sponsorship, etc. If you are in the know
about this (or in the Peter Carr Peace Center group) please email the list about
this item. Also we will contact 2000+ bookstore in Long Beach about a possible
speaker to go with the video showing.

2. Our planning for the Antiwar day/concert is ongoing. The concert will begin at
5pm in the Nugget with 2 confirmed bands so far (Over the Counter Intelligence and
Bullet Train to Vegas) and more bands TBA, as well as artists and spoken word. The
daytime event is less laid out, but will most likely be outside on the southwest
terrace with tables, speakers, art, and a rally type atmosphere. Anti-war Tshirts
are also a big possibility, thanks to Marc (see his t-shirt design in our
office!). Food for that event will also be an issue we might talk about in the
upcoming weeks.

3. The Anti War resolution brought to the CSULB Senate was defeated by one vote.
There are 4 vacant senate seats so maybe we can fill em up and get it passed!
(corruption in the government?! Who woulda thunk it!!?) Anyway for more details on
that read today’s 49er front page article.

4. Tuesday’s pro America rally put on by the young republicans was disrupted by
the presence of many anti-war protesters (who outnumbered the republicans) and
continually booed racist speaker and author/commentator, David Horowitz. The 49er
ran a front page article and inside articles regarding that (including an article
authored by Uduak) on Wednesday.

5. Candace is a member of KPFK’s Asian + Pacific Islander radio collective and
will be producing a show on Imperialism. It will include a panel discussion and
she has asked members to participate. Uduak and Nina, among others voiced
interest. The show airs every Friday nite/sat morning from 1-3am on 90.7fm and the
Imperialism show will air March 1, so listen! Also, speaking of KPFK, look out for
an email from Uduak regarding getting involved at KPFK radio and getting your
issues on the air through a youth collective.

6. A new small campaign regarding nuclear weapons is in the works, with plans to
raise awareness on campus about nuclear weapons, including weapons in space/NASA.
Currently we are going to try and get some literature and a table day to pass out
info, and possible events and more tabling in the future.

7. On March 5th and 6th (at 5PM and 8PM) here on campus in the USU small
auditorium the comedic documentary "Bowling for Columbine" will be shown for only
$1. The film was written and directed by filmmaker/author Michael Moore. If you
haven’t seen this movie, go see it, it’s funny! It’s about guns in the united
states and those issues.

8. Our website is still in the process of reworking, and Carl and Andy are
working on that (?) Please post any comments or questions regarding that issue to
the list, and hopefully soon we will see some new stuff/designs up on the site.

Our next meeting is at the same time at the same place next week! USU 309 at 5pm
on Wednesday. Please come and bring your ideas, report backs, and information to
help make our campus more down for the revolution!

Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting and gave their input, and we hope to
see more of you next time!

--Sheila--
