Campus Progressives Update
11/9/02
Hola amigos y amigas!
Here's an UPDATE at CSULB as it pertains to student activists in Campus
Progressives and other groups:
1)Thanks to everyone who came out to the Nov.7 "Mexican Women speak out
on Free trade event". It was successful. 50 people attended, others
dropped in and out along the cafeteria area, and the guest speakers
were able to sell much of their crafts and fundraise.
2)However, I think that should be the last speaker-type of event we
should have, (until CP group re-organizes, whenever and IF EVER that may
be) We are so messy and there is little accountablility. It was
basically Udauk , math professor Scott Crass, and I pitching in, and
that was hardly enough participation. *Mental note to myself: Hold off
these types of events until we can guarantee more equal participation
within CP and get out act together.
3) The best way to proceed is to have CP on AUTOPILOT for the rest of the
year. Meetings should have related political discussions, but as far as
real ACTIONS go, we should just focus on:
a. ANTIWAR RALLY Dec.5 with Antiwar coalition. We are still asking for
more and more sponsors, endorsers, publicizing it!
Go to their meetings, every Fri. 2pm in Multicultural Center.
b. BOYCOTT TACO BELL campaign with La Raza (who just formed Taco Bell
committee) and are planning monthly actions, publicizing issue to entire
STUDENT BODY, etc. 35 colleges are participating in this national
corporate campaign. Taco Bell HQ are in Irvine, our backyard; what
excuse do we have to not take this on? (This is really important because
if we really fight, and can actually win this case, it will leave a REAL
tangible, LASTING EFFECT on our campus!!!!)
[as opposed to vaguely, solely "raising general awareness" with
haphazardly-organized independent g! uest speaker events].
4) NETWORKING:
Keep talking to people, there are students, writers, on and off campus
who are interested in CP. Keep making relevant connections. If there is
no follow-up, otherwise interested people shake their heads and walk
away!
5)AGENDA for next meeting:
a. Mary "Jesus" Ghigorro? (a longtime friend of Uduak, and a self-
admitted highstrung chain-smoking gal when I met her on Thursday) is a
new CSULB student who wants to hold loose, informal, weekly discussions
about war and current events. The meetings are dubbed "This Thursday"
(that's when they take place). She asks if she can use Campus
Progressives name (for SLD clearance). She does not need any money or
organization support. She is otherwise an unaffiliated, independent
activist, walking around campus with a "STOP BUSH" signpost. ( I don't
mean to bash her, she is nice and funny). Shoul! d we have this be an
autopilot, quasi-Campus Progressives "sponsored" weekly event? It's an
open forum, political discussion. That is all. Y'ALL MUST VOTE on this
NEXT WEEK.
b. Peter Carr Peace center meeting to re-establish the center: ALL
WELCOME
THurs. Nov.14, 5-6pm in Multicultural Center.
c.Tabling on USU SouthWest Terrace on Wed. Nov.20 during INt'l Education
Week.
~ 10am -2pm. COME TABLE.
ya basta!
-Connie
(who might try to squirm out of class early next week for the meeting)
