Campus Progressives Meeting
2/20/02
- Mission Statement:
We talked about changing, modifying, enhancing or rewriting our mission statement. Members are being asked to consider what should be done with the old mission statement and write new suggestions (if any change is desired).
- Globalization Conference:
- Jim has been jumping through the bureaucratic hoops and will be asking for $3,500 to fund the conference. It is an overestimate that should give us a little leeway.
- It was suggested that we get one or more co-sponsors from colleges on campus so they can use the funds associated with their college.
- Sheila has contacted the IMC and they will be sending Micheal Parenti to speak at the conference.
- Also being asked to speak is a person by the name of Bronson from Jubilee South and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine. For more information on Jubilee South go to www.jubileesouth.net.
- Cuban Introsection(?) will be contacted as well.
- It was suggested that we promote the upcoming event in April in Washington D.C. before and during the conference.
- (Jim didn't present a flyer at this meeting, and we didn't consense on the Green Party sponsoring the event as was promised in the last minutes.)
- Government Spying Petition:
The petitions were collected for the ASI Senate meeting. (At the 3:30 meeting: With a small crowd of supporters, several articulate activists, and a few intelligent senators the Senate decided, in an 8-5 decision, to adopt the resolution demanding that President Maxson and the university administration not cooperate with the USA PATRIOT Act - not cooperate with government spying, discrimination, and racial profiling of students.)
- Newsletter:
Uduak could not install the software because he does not have new software. Unless someone donates or allows the group to use his/her computer we cannot use the uninstalled software and thus cannot have a newsletter (unless there are other unknown possibilities).
- The Debate:
We discussed the debate taking place on Tues. Feb. 26. that we are sponsoring between Democratic Congressional candidate Peter Mattews, the incumbent Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, and some other person that we choose. It was said that Jeb might be looking for someone but that we might want to have other people searching for a speaker as well.
- Events:
- The Student Anti-War Coalition is meeting tomorrow (Thursday) at 1 PM.
- Long Beach Food Not Bombs meets Sundays at Noon at (the place formerly known as) A-Occasions and serves food at about 3 PM.
