Campus Progressives Meeting

- OUR MEETING TIME AND PLACE HAS CHANGED, IT IS NOW ON WEDNESDAYS AT 1 PM IN USU 309.
- We discussed the basics of the globalization conference that we are going to hold on Tuesday, April 16th from 12 Noon - 8 PM.
- The name of the conference is "Globalizing Humanity : A Conference to Further the Movement of Social Justice and Peace".
- We have confirmed 5 speakers for the 11 workshops and Sheila and is going to be checking with LA-IMC and see if they want to put on a workshop about the media's role in fermenting public opinion. We have confirmed speakers for these workshops:
The new global feminist movement (Dr. Norma Chinchina)
Sweatshop Labor and "immigrant workers" (Dr. Xiolan Bao)
Indeginous People (Dr. Renee Cramer)
Race in a Global world (Dr. Sauceda)
- These are the workshops that still need speakers:
History of globalization
International Institutions (WTO, IMF, World Bank)/Governments
Sex Trafficking women (Little Tokyo Service center is probable)
Labor and Globalization
War/ethnic conflict
Refugees
Environment and technology
Media's role (LA-IMC probable)
- We are also going to need three workshops dealing with alternatives offered in the face of globalization and people to put on these workshops. Prof. Larry George is interested in doing a workshop/speaking and hopefully he will get back us but he is very busy at the moment. Jim has contacted Global exchange, International Forum on Globalization, and Just
Act (a youth based organization). They are all interested, but he has not heard back from them.
- There are going to be comittees that are responsible for outreach (Emily), Literature/Documentries (Bjorn?), Logistics/Funding (Jim), that are all going to need help, so if you have the time please do help.
- We want to confirm all the workshops speakers by February 13th so we can move on to the next phase of planning this conference.
- We also discussed the March Against Police Brutality that is going to be taking place on Saturday, February 9, from 3 - 5 PM.
- It is going to start at the corner of Broadway and Pacific and all are encouraged to attend. Bring cameras and camcorders if possible.
- There is a planning meeting this Saturday at 8 PM at A-Occasions info shop and maybe Sheila or Jeb or anyone else who attends that meeting can report back to this list.
- Events:
- March Against Police Brutality - Saturday, February 9, from 3 - 5 PM, starting at the corner of Broadway and Pacific. Bring cameras and camcorders if possible.
- Planning meeting for the March Saturday, Feb 2 at 8 PM at A-Occasions info shop.
- There is going to be a Student Peace Action Network conference on the weekend of Feb 16th and 17th at the Claremont Colleges. For info/ways of getting to and from the conference e-mail Jim.
