Campus Progressives Meeting
11/(14 or 21)/01
- Facilitator - Jaime
Notes - Emily
Time - Sheila
- Our meeting time and day for NEXT semester will stay the same. Wednesdays at NOON in a USU meeting room TBA. Our office in USU 309 will also remain (plus, our computers were upgraded).
- A proposal for a last event of this semester was decided upon.
- We would like to invite Long Beach Food Not Bombs to serve free vegan food on Thursday, December 6th from 12 PM to 1 PM on the USU terrace, along with DJs spinning music, etc and info tables.
- We have leftover money from our last grant and could provide a donation for FNB to get food as well as for reserving equipment for music, etc.
- The planning is ongoing and please feel free to respond with ideas.
- NEXT semester we are already planning a one day conference on globalization to be held in April on a date TBA.
- It will include many speakers and workshops, as well as music and food, most likely featuring Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine (he has been contacted and agreed, but we must determine a date before confirmation) as he is a local activist and musician.
- We are having the first planning meeting for the globalization day on Wednesday December 5th at 12:30pm (connected to and following our upcoming final general meeting) ... please attend if you have any ideas or want to participate in planning/logistics.
- Newsletter meeting Monday at noon in USU 309!
- We will meet once (or twice) over winter break, and dates/times of those meetings are TBA. One idea is January 16th at 1pm in USU 309 ... there will be a reminder later on!
- Reports back:
- Our sweatshop teach-in outside on monday went really well!
- Jeb had a good olde time in Ottawa Canada protesting the G20 summit, etc.
- AND The Anti-War conference in Berkeley was bunk! But we hope to have another conference in Southern California to improve the solidarity among anti-war action groups...
- More people need to come to our meetings! only 8 people came today! While we are glad to dedicate our time to issues on and off campus regarding politics and change, it is vital for widescale participation to remain supportive. If meeting times are inconvenient and you still want to help (and yes it makes a difference!) please feel free to stop by the office and talk, e-mail the list, or submit an article to the newsletter regarding any issue you feel strongly about. If you are an artist, musician, writer, or computer enthusiast, your talents are greatly appreciated and can be helpful in a lot of ways, so don't hesitate to make suggestions, take initiative, and discuss ideas with the group ...
- Reminder: A-Occasions Infoshop is having an open WORKSHOP on sexism in the movement. Smash the patriarchy at 7pm Sunday Nov. 25th at 684 Redondo Ave, Long Beach.
- There is an anti-war student coalition teach-in on Wednesday the 28th at 1-3 PM in the USU president's room (next to Carl's Jr) featuring Michel Shehadeh of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee who had helped plan and organize the Palestinian Struggle for Justice Conference that was postponed after the Sept. 11th crashes. It should be a very good opportunity to learn more about the motivations for war and the different perspectives involved.
- We have done a lot so far this semester, especially with making our school join the WRC and the FLA (and making them pay!) and we still have a lot of work to do to ensure that CSULB is down for the revolution!
