Campus Progressives Meeting
11/7/01
- SWEATSHOP TEACH-IN:
- Mon. Nov. 19, 12 to 2 PM at the Free Speech Platform on Upper Campus.
- Confirmed speakers include Mariam Ching Yoon Louie, author of Sweatshop Warriors and someone from the Garment Workers Center in L.A. We also plan to get someone from the WRC (Workers Rights Consortium).
- We need to bombard the campus with flyers, get other clubs' endorsements, and find professors willing to give extra credit to students to attend the event.
- Hoped for attendance: ~300 people.
- President Maxson and others are currently cooperative and we should try to follow up on this campaign.
- VEGAN BAKE SALE:
- On Mon. Nov.5, we raised $31.63 at the psych bldg. sale. The money was transfered to the Campus Progressives general account.
- The $58 debt for renting the USU room for our October Columbia Forum was paid for by teachers in the History Dept. After the meeting, we all signed a thank-you card for their support.
- ANTI-WAR WEST COAST CONFERENCE AT UC BERKELEY:
- Sat-Sun. Nov. 10-11, at UCB
- A group of 5-8 students from CSULB (some from Campus Progressives) will be there to represent our school, sit on panels, and report back to the campus when they return.
- The conference will be packed with workshops on campus organizing, ways to stop the war, how get the community involved, etc. Hundreds of schools on the West Coast are confirmed to be participating.
- SUPPORT MAY DAY ARRESTEES:
Thurs. Nov. 15 at the Long Beach Courthouse (415 W. Ocean). There will be a demonstration in support of those who are and were wrongfully imprisoned for excercising their civil rights during May Day this year. 2 arrestees were deported to Mexico, an activist going by the name of "Ruckus" is still in prison and may possibly face up to 20 years in prison. Most arrestees took plea bargains, and many were slapped with conspiracy felonies. Come out and support.
- CFA -GET ON THE BUS:
Wed., Nov. 14. Meet at Brotman Hall to leave at 8:45 am on the Bus. The bus will return by noon.
The CFA (California Faculty Assoc.) & supporters are following up on their October campus-wide teach-ins and will hold a rally and short march at the downtown Long Beach office of CSU Chancellor Charles Reed. Get on the Bus or come individually. Representatives from different CSU's will be there. For more info, call the CFA office at 562-985-5165.
- VEGETARIAN CLUB:

- FUNDRAISING:
Sarah contacted Northern Sun merchandise to get info on their propaganda. Wholesale prices are available after a minimal purchase worth $100. We are going to use the Food Not Bombs tax ID number for this.
- NEWSLETTER:
- We plan to release at least one issue/sample of our new newsletter, Solidarity, before the semester is over.
- Confirmed articles will be about: joining the WRC, May Day, October's Columbia Forum, IMF meetings in Ottawa, Canada, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and follow-ups on the Anti-War Conference in Berkeley. Book and Music Reviews are also planned. The articles should be ~300-350 words.
- Submissions and ideas are welcome!
- SLD(Student Life and Development) said we might be able to get the newsletter funded by a department instead of ASI (Associated Students).
- General Announcements:
- The Long Beach Anarchist community has obtained a co-op, the Infoshop, on 7th and Redondo. It was formerly, "All Occassions" Flowershop. It will be available for the greater community to use (space, computers, resources), with workshops, music, etc. planned. Come by if you dare.
