Campus Progressives Meeting
9/14/01
- The Palestinian Conference is postponed indefinitely (cancelled) due to the events on Tuesday and the implications of those events.
- The anti-sweatshop movement is ongoing.
- We will work with other campus groups with the same goal (removing sweatshop clothing from our stores) in the CSU system.
- Jim will be talking to ASI president Wayne Stickney-Smith, as he sits on the board of the 49er Shops as a student representative. Wayne is sympathetic to our cause and will help us by telling us the steps necessary to carry out our goals.
- We would also like to look into joining up with WRC (Workers Rights Consortium) so they can help us effectively remove the use of sweatshop labor for CSULB products as well as insure a good working environment for those who do produce the merchandise sold at CSULB.
- We will report back on this issue next meeting.
- We have decided to move forward with an event (titled: "What's Wrong with Plan Colombia? A Forum on US Involvement in Colombia") on October 3rd at Noon in location TBA (most likely USU multipurpose room A or B) including speakers and discussion.
- The days before this, we will have tables outside to make students aware of the event and the issue. (tables will be monday Oct 1 and tuesday Oct 2)
- All of this is leading up to a demonstration to be held on October 5th at Noon in Westwood near UCLA that will focus on resisting Plan Colombia.
- Our main task right now is to organize speakers to educate our campus about Plan Colombia, and to work with other campus organizations to build an audience. We will also report back on this issue at our next meeting, and have info on Plan Colombia.
- We will be discussing the above topics, along with our website situation, at our next meeting. We will also have a 30 minute workshop on consensus decision making and meeting facilitation, given by Candace and Jeff, in order to help us stay productive, inclusive, and efficient as a growing organization.
- Events:
- Columbian embassy protest.
- On October 13th, 9 AM: Running Down the Walls - a 5K run/walk through the trails of Griffith Park in L.A. It is designed to raise funds for the Anarchist Black Cross Federation's Warchest program, for the support of political prisoners.
