Campus Progressives Meeting
9/5/01
- More talk of the teach-in on October 17th to support the faculty union, etc.
- Sweatshop protest discussed: we need more organization. First, get the facts, write a petition, give it to the appropriate officials, wait for a response, then protest if there's no positive response. Initially planned to take place on September 20th, the demonstration will probably be postponed.
- Plan Columbia protest mentioned (1-2 weeks from now).
- We discussed the Palestinian Struggle for Justice Conference [rorconference.com] that we are sponsoring. October 5-7 in the University Student Union.
- An information table is to be set up on Monday and Tuesday, 9 AM to 4 PM. (September 10 and 11)
- Two protests and a meeting:
- Some of our members were able to participate in an Organized Labor march on Labor Day - very apropos.
- On the night of September 2, there was a protest against a neo-Nazi concert in Anaheim at the Shack. A few of our members attended this protest as well.
- Also, a Free Palestine meeting occurred on the 6th at 7:30 PM.
- Events:
- Columbian embassy protest. (1-2 weeks from now)
- On October 13th, 9 AM: Running Down the Walls - a 5K run/walk through the trails of Griffith Park in L.A. It is designed to raise funds for the Anarchist Black Cross Federation's Warchest program, for the support of political prisoners.
- Teach-in on October 17th to support faculty union, etc.
- The Student Coalition to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal will have it's next meeting on Wednesday (September 12) at 1 PM right after our meeting in the same room as ours (USU 307).
- Notes - Many good suggestions were made at this meeting:
- Planning about three large main events each year might be a prudent stategy.
- We should learn from the Christian activity on campus. The energy and organization they function with seems to work for them. Subtract the dogma and many of those religious clubs resemble ours.
- We could (and will) use the radio station in the USU for dissemination of political information.
- Public television is also a possibilty.
- When relaying information to people, it would be a good idea to always include the optimistic side to it, such as "what you can do" or "here's what's been successful."
- Create a visual timeline of successful movements. (So people don't just hear about problems and "doom and gloom.")
- Be sure to get all the facts (from credible sources) before plowing ahead into some activity. We need credibility and respect.
