1. Anti-War March
There will be a global day of protest on March 18th against the War. The Progressives voted to attend the march in Orange County because we figured they needed more support than L.A.
We will be meeting on campus on Friday, March 17th at 5pm to make posters and organize transportation. Hopefully, La Raza will let us use their office on the second floor of FO4! So come help us make posters or meet up with the rest of us at Hart Park, Orange, 701 S. Glassell St, at 12 noon. If you want to go to the L.A. march, it will also be at 12 noon at Hollywood & Vine. Visit www.ocpeace.org and contact Taylor at thonrath@socal.rr.com for more info. Ha ha, Taylor, you were just volunteered as the go-to person
2. South Central Farmers
One of the largest urban farms is threatened by developers who want to turn into yet another shopping center. Right now, activists have prevented the official plans from being approved, so the land is in a stay of execution of sorts. There will be protests at Ralph Horowitz’s (main developer) and Mayor Villaraigosa houses. On Sunday, there will be another concert for the 14-acre farm. Contact Sumi (soulinmyfist@yahoo.com) or James (james_yamanoha@hotmail.com) and go to www.southcentralfarmers.com for more info.
3. Puvungna
Elena from the Beachcomber publication visited us for some information about what students are doing for Puvungna. The Puvungna resolutions will be voted on in the Senate, but students are still welcome to speak even at later Senate meetings. Contact Elisa (eherrer2@csulb.edu) for more info.
4. AS Elections
We briefly discussed endorsing candidates for AS, but decided to table this since we had no platform statements from anyone. Everyone NEEDS to obey the elections regulations or else you are going to get served. Serious. Contact Elisa (eherrer2@csulb.edu) for more info.
5. HR 4437 & Immigrant Issues
Update on the anti-immigrant legislation going around: there is still a push in the House for a bill to build a wall etc. along the U.S.-Mexico border. Without objection, the Progressives decided to endorse a ChiLeS event with three speakers who will discuss this subject and actions going on in Costa Mesa. I didn’t get the date & time, but Xochitl will send the info out to the announcements lists. Contact Xochitl (xhernand@csulb.edu) for more info.
6. Darfur Action League
The Darfur Action League is working to stop genocide in Africa. They will meet Tuesday in the Newport room, USU-303 at 3pm. The UC Regents meeting is approaching, where the divestment of UC and CSU funds will be discussed. Peter will give us an update. Contact Peter (petersablove@hotmail.com) for more info.
7. El Reflejo
La Raza has just released the first issue of its new publication, El Reflejo. They would like to circulate this around campus and educate others about cultural and activist issues. If you would like to make contributions (meaning writing or money), contact Jaime at jaime_agredano@yahoo.com.
8. Standup for Kids
We discussed this briefly at the last meeting; it is an organization to help homeless children. Peter mentioned this, but he bailed before we could talk about it :-P Visit www.standupforkids.org for more info.
9. Progressives & ChiLeS Film Festival
We have a slew of film nights approaching. There was a problem with communication between Progressives and ChiLeS! But we are going to rectify that. Sumi put together a revised flyer will all movies, descriptions, and dates, so print them out, post them, and pass them around. Oh, and come to the film, too.
10. Internal Stuff, Constitution, and Communication
There is still some confusion about our two e-mail lists. Also, there was some discussion on our structure and if any changes would benefit the organization. We went over some different scenarios, skimming the surface of what we might do in the future. Please review the structure document that Mike sent out and jot down any suggestions/concerns to bring to the table next time we discuss. Elisa suggested that no one can be a facilitator more than once until everyone has had a chance/ has been forced to facilitate a meeting. Also, we are going to have icebreakers at each meeting to help us get to know each other better.
** Mike was voted to be one of our new moderators for the announcements list. **
11. Kaleidoscope
The Kaleidoscope festival is approaching: Saturday, 29 April. Thu Ha is heading up a committee for our “Creating Change” booth. They meet Fridays from 4-5 in the Women’s Resource Center. Please come to help with planning. Also, suggestions and drawings for the coloring book are welcome! Contact Thu Ha at bec248@gmail.com for more info.
12. Women’s History Month
Question: Do the Progressives want to organize a special event for Women’s History Month? If you have any ideas, let us know and we can help make it happen. In the meantime, we are going to see what other organizations and departments have planned.
13. Action Committee
Tossing around ideas for “active activism,” meaning street theater, art, and demonstrations to educate and increase awareness for different issues. Ideas? Send them to James at james_yamanoha@hotmail.com.
14. Announcements:
** The Coalition for Clean Air meets Wednesdays at 5:00pm in the Multicultural Center.
** Speech & Debate Team and folk-singer David Rovics will perform Thursday, March 16 at 7-9pm in Lecture Hall 151.
