1. ASI Stuff
The ASI office released a list of candidate for the upcoming Spring elections. There are tons of people running, it’s great! Normally, they can barely find anyone to run. The campaign season will begin Monday. Sean told everyone he was running for president and had been to the La Raza meeting and now the Progressives to talk about his platforms. The official list of eligible candidate will come out next week. For more info, contact Elisa at eherrer2@csulb.edu
2. Puvungna Update
Next week on Wednesday, March 8, the AS Senate will be discussing and likely voting on the passage of two resolutions regarding the burial ground/village of Puvungna. Please attend and give your input at the meeting during the Open Comments section held at the beginning of the meeting. The meetings start at 3:30pm in USU-217. 3. Kaleidoscope Committee
Thuha and Xochitl have been planning the Progressives’ “Creating Change” booth at the Kaleidoscope festival which will take place on Saturday, April 29th, 11am-5pm. They have already reserved two tables and are compiling an activist coloring book for children. Sumi and Jasmine volunteered to help with the committee, which meets Fridays at 4-5pm in the Women’s Resource Center – LA3-104. Any other ideas and contributions are welcome. 4. Action Committee - World Can’t Wait, etc.
James is organizing an action committee to organize various events for presidential impeachment and other political movements. He was unable to make it, but you can reach him at james_yamanoha@hotmail.com
5. Film Festival & Aristide and the Endless Revolution
Our film festival, in collaboration with the Chican@ / Latin@ Studies Student Assoc. (CHiLeS) continues. The latest installment is Aristide and the Endless Revolution, which will be screened on March 1st and Thursday, March 9 at 6:00pm in the Multicultural Center, FO3-003.
Also, we discussed options for upcoming films. Some suggestions: The Weathermen Underground, End of Suburbia, The Atomic Bomb, N-Word, Letter to President, The Corporation, and a film made by member Yehuda called InshAllah. For more info, contact Xochitl at xhernand@csulb.edu
6. David Rovics Event
Usama Kahf, lecturer in Communications, and from the Forensics/Speech & Debate team inquired if the Progressives would sponsor/endorse an upcoming showcase event that will feature activist folk singer David Rovics. The event will be on Thursday, March 16 from 7-9pm in Lecture Hall 141. Go to www.davidrovics.com for more info. If no one objects by Friday, we will sponsor.
7. Standup for Kids
Someone from Standup for Kids contacted Sean about volunteering to help homeless children. For more info, go to www.standupforkids.org
8. Announcements
The Chican@/Latin@ Studies Student Association has a few upcoming events:
Thursday, March 2 at 3:30 in LA5-167 they will screen Not Enough Space, on Puerto Rican communities, social space, and political activism in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Tuesday, March 21 at 3:30 in the Anatol Center, CHLS will be discussing the Brenner Bill, written by some racist legislators to build a wall at the US-Mexico border.
