1. Introductions
Welcome to new and returning members. That's about it...
2. Haiti Speaking Tour & Video
HAITI SPEAKING TOUR with FILM: "HAITI: BETRAYAL OF DEMOCRACY"
In Southern California February 16-19
AT CSULB February 16th
6pm at Beach Auditorium (location tentative)
Regarding how our wonderful, freedom-loving U.S. Government, in the name of liberty and democracy, participated in a coup to undermine and overthrow democratically-elected leader Aristide in Haiti.
Jeb and Zahra have been working on this over the break, and pretty much everything is in order; waiting on the official room reservation. Jeb made some really neat-o flyers. As event grows nearer, we'll need some volunteers to help publicize.
3.1 Progressive Week
Continuing plans from last semester to hold a week of events designed to get people educated and involved. Possible lectures, workshops, films. Alison is in contact with a group to bring hip-hop performers to campus. Aiming for March or late February if we're ambitious. Waiting on the word from other student groups for possible collaboration.
3.2 and in the same vein, Progressive Film Month
Set for every Thursday in March in the Beach Auditorium. Progressive-themed films or documentaries (we have a number to choose from) to be screened at CSULB, followed by discussion. Elisa will schedule room reservation with SLD and secure A/V equipment.
4. AIDE (Action in Defense of Education)
THIS WEEKEND, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th 9am-5pm
State-wide meeting at UCLA Downtown Labor Center
Student activists from college campus around the entire state assemble to form a united front to fight for educational justice. Reform the broken system in which money and effort is wasted due to corruption. No more spending money to plaster GO BEACH on buildings, kiosks, AT THE BOTTOM OF A FREAKING POOL, while student-oriented programs like Upward Bound, EOP, etc are slashed out of existence. Make education about the STUDENTS. Events in the works: March in March; April statewide campus walkouts; May TBA.
It's this weekend, short notice, but we can do it. More information: aide@riseup.net or 213-705-5903.
5. ASI Involvement
Officially, we are not allowed to announce any candidates or partake in anything that might be construed as campaign activities. Suffice it to say that we encourage students to participate in Associated Students Inc. You can do this by volunteering, or even better running for an ASI position, like Senator of your college. Elections for next year's positions will be held later in the semester. And if you see Lamya around campus, use peer pressure to make her run for Senate! I know she'd win.
Think about it...
