Campus Progressive Meeting - Notes 28 January 2004, Uduak and Elisa

Attendance: Andrew, Blake, Elisa, Jaime, Mike (surveillance agent), Uduak, Yehuda, Zahra, and one big ol’ opossum looking down on us from the trees.
Facilitating: Zahra

Agenda:

- SPRING EVENTS IDEAS (Zahra)

Speaker/Teach-Out events for March 20 (One-year “anniversary” of Bush’s Iraqi War); May 13 (“Birthday” of the creation of Israel); and Oppression awareness week (but possibly framing it in a more positive outlook, e.g. Humanitarian Week). Guest speakers and/or CSULB faculty to discuss imperative issues on U.S. foreign policy and war. Collaborative partners include African Student Union, La Raza, Muslim Students Association, History Students Association, and any others wanting to come on board.

- VIDEO SERIES (Yehuda and Connie)

Continuing discussion from the e-mail list regarding screening documentaries/films with progressive ideas about domestic and world events, alternatives to media propaganda, insightful information about war and the Bush Administration(s).

- TABLING (Jaime)

During Week of Welcome or other university expo events as well as regularly during the semester. It only takes one or two people to get this going. Even if we can get members to help out just for 15 minutes or so (more if you can), it will increase the Progressives’ visibility greatly.

- OUTREACH (Elisa)

Collaboration with other on-campus groups for our activities and theirs to get our name out there and involved with more events. Actively seek out other groups to form a more powerful political student organization coalition. SLD has a list of organization meeting times and locations and we can start by sending some feelers out there once we lay down some more concrete event plans. Anyone involved in other organizations – let us know what’s going on.

- STRATEGY AND THEME (Uduak)

We should formulate an overarching theme that ties together all our events and actions, with emphasis on getting Bush out of office. Possibly coming up with a theme name or phrase that is instantly recognizable and summarizes the our goals. Focus on the upcoming election and get the word out with increased flyers, posting, chalkboard use that educate students about the facts of the Bush Administration.

Meetings will continue at 5:00 on Wednesdays, but the e-mail list is always available for communication.
