Campus Progressive Meeting - Notes 08 February 2006, Xochitl

Campus Progressive Collective meeting minutes for February 8, 2006 (Sorry about the length, my first time)

In attendance – Elisa, Taylor, Jasmine, Lakhana, Travis, Rolando, Lamya, Sean, Xochitl. Jeb, Uduak, Peter, Thu-ha, Michael, Jeremiah, Jaime, Cristian, Christopher, Bryan, Steven, Juan Carlos, Denise

1. Puvungna- This piece of land, next to the Japanese gardens, (which many have stated looks like just a bunch of weeds), is actually a Native American historical site. At one time is was a village and now is a sacred burial ground. Archaeological remains have even been found. For more info you can check out an article called Lies, Bribes & Archaeology: the struggle to save Puvungna, you can contact jeb at jebsprague@mac.com for a copy. Students have actually been in contact with the tribes and they are so very appreciative that students are interested in protecting Puvungna. Because with the new president, Alexander, and the creation of a long range plan, puvungna is being considered as a site for possible future dorms or shops. PLEASE come

In order to provide a historical and current status of Puvungna, Alumni and Member of the CSULB Repatriation Committee, Dwight Manuel will be on campus to share his in depth knowledge of this sacred land. As this is a forum for learning about Puvungna, we ask that people come with an open mind and heart to learn about this sacred land. As such, feel free to send this email to people who are interested in gaining more information about Puvungna.

We will have flyers at our at our Maxson cubicle, publicize, tell your instructors and peers. E-mail to all students on your Beachboard classes.

2. Kaleidoscope will be April 29, 2006 11am to 5pm. Progressives will have a table in which we will be selling posters of inspirational leaders, political activist and others who we look up to. We will also have bumper stickers, buttons, children’s coloring books and deserts/brownies with a quote or so on them. Please e-mail suggestions to xhernand@csulb.edu for the faces you would like to see. I want at least one person from each person. Also if you have any locations in which we can get any of this stuff, please e-mail.

3. Divestment. Genocide is going on RIGHT NOW in Darfur, Sudan and our university can do something about it. An divestment plan has been developed. UC’s have already began the process and CSU should follow. Chico already has an team together so we have contacts. Peter wants to get a team together to help with all the duties needed. Contact him at petersablove@hotmail.com. We need to bring a lot of awareness. A movie showing should be taking place in weeks to come, the movie Hotel Rwanda were discussed as well as a movie nobody knew the title of April Sunday Showers? Please bring actual title to next meeting. Tabling will also take place, dates TBA.

4. Haiti. We will be showing 2 videos one on February 22 at the multicultural center at 5:30 pm and the second (hopefully) on Feb 28. We are still looking for a room. But Feb. 28 is actually the 2nd year anniversary. Want more info? Contact Jeb at jebsprague@mac.com

5. Movie nights. We will have a movie coalition with Chiles. One month Wednesdays and the next month Thursdays. We will alternate movie night weeks. This will be kicked off by the Haiti event. If you have movies in mind e-mail xhernand@csulb.edu

6. Challenge White Supremacy. We are trying to sponsor Chris Cash to come talk on campus. His workshops will help end racism. We are trying to get something going before campus elections which are 3rd or 4th week in March. Racism at CSULB is still around and we do not want unfortunate events to repeat. 8. Wetlands. This is the area across from tower records here in long beach. Home Depot is planning to build over this area and there has been mobilization around the community to prevent it. A tour will be given February 17 at noon to anyone interested. To attend we will be meeting at some hotel near location contact Jeb for exact location jebsprague@mac.com

9. Gang Stalking. Sean is interested in having progressives make an appereance and having our voices heard at city council meetings. (sorry my notes aren’t so good on what you explained can you e-mail it to us) I know Cris S. Coalition for Clean Air regularly attends. 10. Women’s History Month is in March. Feminist Organization Reclaiming Consciousness and Equality (FORCE) is working on something. Maybe havings speakers and a band. If interested or have imput contact Thuha at bec248@gmail.com

11. Minuteman. An upcoming film screening of "Rights on the Line” about immigration policy and the Minuteman Project along with a Panel Discussion with Arnoldo Garcia, Monica Hernandez, and Chris Newman while be held Saturday, February 11, 2 p.m. at the Southern Califonia Library 6120 S. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90044 Admission is free and refreshments will be offered. The event will be available with Spanish translations and families are welcome.

12. Human Relation Summit. 50 students will be selected to paricipate in the human relation summit. It is an anti-racism weekend. The deadline to turn in an application is March 1st. you can also contact uduak for more info at uduakjoe@hotmail.com

13. Starbucks. Two starbucks might be coming on campus. One will be in the library and one will replace the backery at the food court next to taco bell. I have a contact person but what can we do? Interested in putting something together contact
