Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest Greek Letter organization established in America by and for Black college women. It's founding on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was inspired by the vision of Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, a black undergraduate desiring to create a liaison between the Black community and Black undergraduate women. She also wanted the sorority to be an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates. Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown from one undergraduate chapter to an international organization with a membership of more than 140,000 women. Our membership is composed of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership and service. Our undergraduate and graduate chapters are located throughout the United States, West Africa, the United Kingdom, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Korea, and Germany.

Lambda Alpha Chapter

Twelve courageous women chartered Lambda Alpha Chapter, in 1976, on the campus of California State University, Long Beach. Since then, our chapter has contributed to the campus community in many ways. We have sponsored Black Male/Female Relationship Workshops, Career Night, African American Graduation Dinner, Sisterhood Tea, and our annual Fashion Show, “Attitudes.” With service, sisterhood and sophistication, the dynamic and distinguished Sorors of Lambda Alpha Chapter continue to uphold the high standards of class, dignity, and grace set forth by our beloved founders.
