EESL and WPE

Examination Of English as a Second Language (EESL)

EESL is mandatory for graduate students who were required to submit TOEFL scores as a condition of admission to CSULB. For the people who have their Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) score 4 (in GRE)or more need not give EESL examination. They should contact International Admissions at CIE for information on an EESL waiver upon arrival.
Registration for the EESL can only be done after you arrive at CSULB. Registration and testing information are provided during CIE Check-In Sessions. Students arriving after the final exam date or who are unable to pass the test will be required to enroll in additional English courses (ALI 145 & ALI 150). Students are responsible for all additional course fees.

EESL examination is conducted for 800 marks. If
  • EESL Score is more than 550, Both ALI-145&150 will be waived off.
  • EESL Score is more than 500, ALI-145 will be waived off, you will be asked to take ALI-150.
  • EESL Examination is conducted twice in the starting of every semester. Students can attempt any one of these exams. ISALB will provide all the new students with EESL material and crash courses.

Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE)

To qualify for a certificate in master’s/bachelor’s degree, every candidate must pass the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) to be certified proficient in written composition in English. Undergraduates must attempt the WPE by the end of the semester in which they attain 65 units, or a hold will be placed on their records and they will not be allowed to register for classes until the test is completed. Master’s candidates must attempt the WPE during their first semester of attendance, or a hold will be placed on all future registration for classes.

A GRE or GMAT analytical essay writing score of 4 or higher can be used to meet the requirement in place of the WPE. One can clear WPE in two attempts, before filing for graduation. Failing which, they have to take a GWAR course to meet the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR).
