HISTORY:::
This club originated as "Students for Nader" during the 2000 Presidential election. Once the election ended, we decided the club should continue, but grow into a broader-based organization for social and political awareness and activism, in the tradition of past progressive CSULB organizations such as Students for Peace and Justice, the Progressive Caucus, and the Peter Carr Peace Center. We were founded in 2001 as a non-sectarian activist group.
Our highlights include:
- successfully pressuring CSULB administration to join the Workers Rights Consortium to prevent sweatshop labor in Fall 2001
- organizing a day-long series of workshops for the Globalization Conference in April 2002 that was attended by over 150 people
- holding an anti-war concert at the Nugget, 20 March 2003
- writing editorials in our school papers on many issues
- opposing the Recreation Center proposal of Fall 2002
- spearheading 3 anti-war rallies in coalition with other clubs on campus.
- co-sponsoring and endorsing many events including forums on the Patriot Act and attack on civil liberties
- hosting a free screening of Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War, March 2004
- organizing a campus-wide walk-out to protest outrageous budget cuts to the California State University system, 6 May 2004
- inviting many speakers onto campus for public forums on such issues as:
- Plan Columbia; with high-profile human rights activist Blase Bonpane, 3 October 2001
- Sweatshop labor; with author Miriam Ching Yoon Louie, 19 September 2001
- National Student Labor Day of Action; with local labor activists, 4 April 2002
- Palestinian issues; with national activists and CSULB professors, 2 May 2002
- Congressional candidate debate; with various candidates, 26 February 2002
- Mexican Solidarity and free trade; with indigenous women from Chiapas, 7 November 2003
- "Iraq: One Year Later" teach-in to mark one year of the War on Iraq, 18 March 2004
In addition to our collective efforts, our members are involved in social activism on an individual basis in a variety of settings and are involved in many other organizations outside of campus, including Food Not Bombs, NAACP, ANSWER, KPFK volunteerism, etc.
