The Fall Leadership Conference proved to be well worth the trip – not to mention the adventures we had in San Francisco! The conference started out with chapter leaders mixing and sharing ideas while building leadership skills during a crazy scavenger hunt in the streets of San Francisco. When all the conference participants arrived the next day, we were treated to fabulous workshops that helped us develop our abilities of working in communities with heavy gang presence, getting credentialed, stoking the fires of political action and more. We were also in for a treat as Reg Weaver (pictured above with local officer Marnee Durgin), president of the NEA (National Education Association), spoke to us and inspired us to make a difference in our communities and our classrooms. We were also blessed to get to hear Anthony Daniels, Student Chairperson for the NEA, speak to us over a Sunday breakfast. We were also encouraged to empower our community members to stand up for their rights to general healthcare. Did you know that being uninsured is the 6^th leading cause of death in the US, and that Senator Shiela Kheul had led a drive for Californians to have access to free medical care through a fund driven by taxes that passed the senate and was vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger? We hope to start a campus-wide drive to support public health care for California, stand by for more information!

The Southern Regional Leadership Conference that was previously scheduled at CSULB has been moved. The new location for the Southern Regional Conference will be at UC Riverside on February 10^th, 2007. For registration materials, please follow this link.

NEA award presented to CSULB's chapter

OUR CHAPTER

New Chapter Award:

Our chapter of SCTA at CSULB was honored with an award for being one of three new chapters throughout the state last year. Thanks to all who helped this club grow. Executive Board President Ngoc Le is shown presenting the NEA award to Chapter President Kyrian Smith in photo above. The statewide SCTA chapter also won the NEA award for the best statewide newsletter last month. The award was accepted on our behalf by new Executive Board President Ngoc Le. Anyone can submit articles to the mailing entitled “I Choose to Teach” that describes chapter successes or insightful anecdotes. To contribute to the newsletter, please contact the SCTA Executive Board’s Communication Editor.

Fundraising: Books and Boots for Kids

Last year we held a donation drive for Bethune Elementary School and Transitional Center to gather donated supplies for the kids – it was a total success because of your help! This year we are holding a fundraiser to provide local homeless kids with shoes, books, and supplies. The proceeds from our “Books and Boots for Kids” drive will benefit the students at Bethune Elementary School. The students at Bethune live in a transitional center for women and children that are homeless. There is a high need for supplies and clothes for these special needs students to help them while through school. We are hoping to raise at least $2000 to provide 100 $20 Payless Shoes gift cards to the school for the students who live there. We will also be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair to provide the school with books to give to the kids. Scholastic will generously donate one book for each dollar we raise, through our book fair and fundraising efforts to provide shoes for the kids at Bethune, to give to kids effected by Hurricane Katrina and Toys for Tots through their “One for Books” campaign. Please help these local kids by purchasing a “Books and Boots for Kids” tennis shoes at any increment – all of the paper tennis shoes will bear the purchasers name and the donation amount, and be proudly displayed in the ED-1 building hallway here at CSULB! Thanks in advance for helping us reach our goal.

Plans are already in the works for a community outreach project, “Outreach to Teach”. Because of the size and nature of the project we had to ask the SCTA Executive Board to help make our vision a reality. Graciously they have adopted our project and are helping us make this dream come true. In the summer hundreds of volunteers from everywhere in the state will descend on LBUSD’s Franklin Classical Middle School and engage in a day of cleaning, mural painting and renovating to make the students wishes come true. We are still in the process of grant writing and finding volunteers and businesses to support a school beautification project. We still need all the help we can get. Follow this link to see photos of a similar event SCTA members participated in at the NEA (National Education Association) Leadership Conference this past June 2006. The project is an intergenerational effort of students, teachers, administrators, retired teachers and other community members who come together to paint walls, murals, beautify classroom displays, plant bright shrubs, clean bathrooms, re-carpet rooms and so much more. Everyone was so proud of all the work we had completed and honored to have been invited to participate in the project.

First Aid Training Success:

Our Free First Aid Certification event helped many people throughout our campus become proficient at saving lives. The training was a blast and we left with our bellies as full as our heads, and hopefully a few new friends. Changes in Membership:

We will have an awards ceremony at the end of the 06-07 school year for active members. For students to receive a certificate which honors their efforts here at SCTA @ CSULB, they will have to attend 4 events throughout the year in addition to paying their dues. Students may attend any combination of workshops, community service projects, or monthly meetings in order to receive the certificate that will look very smart their portfolios!

LOOKING FOR A JOB?

Below is a list of some of the surrounding districts that one can apply to as a college student with a bachelors degree. Many will require that you have passed the CBEST and/or the CSET prior to being considered for substitute positions, and all will require a substitute permit from the CCTC, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

All schools could use good volunteers and we could all use some experiential training. Check out the VIPS, Volunteers in Public Schools. Not only can you get hours for course work, but you can learn from teachers while helping kids in our public schools at the grade level you prefer.
