Mission Statement

We the Black Psychology Student Association exist in order to provide a support network which primarily focuses on preparing ourselves to become successful members of the psychological community. We plan to achieve this goal through the acknowledgement that, as black Psychologist, we must approach the discipline of psychology from a multicultural schema in order to effectively assist our specific cultural community.

Specifically these goals may be best achieved through:

1)      Cultural enrichment

a.      Familiarity with past and current African psychological publications.

b.      Understanding the history of African psychology.

2)      Networking

a.      Active involvement in community and cultural events.

b.      The attendance of relevant conferences.

c.      Possible job or internship opportunities.

d.      Hosting relevant speakers.

3)      Graduate school preparation

a.      Research opportunities.

b.      GRE preparation.

c.      Program information.

“Working African psychology should be guided by at least two major concerns.  First, we must recognize our position in history.  The reascension of black psychology is no less then reclamation of the African ancestry of humanity.  The historical record will show that the development of African psychology, from the discipline inception, been guided and enriched by the recognition of the need to grapple with an understanding of the fundamental nature of what it is to be human… Secondly, we must recognize that the legacy of western psychology has left us with tools which distort any understanding of black reality.” --- Dr. Wade W. Nobles, African Psychology.
