IS ETHICAL LEADERSHIP AN OXYMORON?

FOUR STEPS TO OVERCOME OUR CULTURAL MALAISE

There can be little doubt from both statistical and anecdotal evidence that contemporary U.S. culture is laboring under an increased cynicism about the very possibility of ethics and leadership. Fr. Robert J. Spitzer, Ph.D., will discuss some of the sources of this precarious turn of events and will suggest four important steps to extricating ourselves from this cynicism:

1) Moving from an “ego-comparative” to a “contributive” approach to purpose and identity.

2) Formulating our own principles – and using them!

3) Reconsidering the four cardinal virtues of Socrates and Plato:

- Wisdom

- Justice

- Moral courage

- Self-discipline

4) Finding rational, practical, and creative ways of applying our principles in difficult ethical situations.

Fr. Spitzer will suggest that these four steps can be integrated into both individual and group reflection and habits, and that wherever they are even partially practiced, the results have been remarkable for transforming not only ethics but also leadership, organizational culture, and organizational effectiveness.

Father Robert Spitzer

Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. is currently president of the Spitzer Center and the chief educational officer for EPI (Ethics and Performance Institute). He was president of Gonzaga University in Spokane from 1998-2009. During that time, he led the efforts to build 20 new facilities, increased the student population by 75%, and raised more than $200 million for scholarships and capital projects.

Among his academic accomplishments, Fr. Spitzer held the John Aram Chair of Business Ethics at Gonzaga University and received the Bunn Medal for most outstanding professor at Georgetown University.

Fr. Spitzer has given hundreds of talks to universities, professional societies, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies, both nationally and internationally. He has made presentations to members of former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Cabinet in London, officials of the Russian Orthodox Church in Russia, both sides of the conflict in Northern Ireland, and government officials in El Salvador.

An author of five books, including Spirit of Leadership: Optimizing Creativity and Change in Organizations, Fr. Spitzer is also no stranger to media appearances. He has been seen on “Larry King Live” (debating Stephen Hawking, Leonard Mlodinow, and Deepak Chopra on God and modern physics), the “Today Show” (debating on the topic of active euthanasia), the History Channel, and was featured in a multiple part PBS Series, “Closer to the Truth”.
