| MURRAY: | I'll start with a brief statement: Jazz has evolved into a sophisticated and multifaceted musical art form that was born in america and developed out of the african american experience. Audiences outside of this country flood its theater, study its intricacies, and value its contribution as a musical expression of the individual within the creative processes. In this country, however, it remains underdeveloped institutionally and underfunded by both the public and private sectors. As a result, americans generally are less appreciative of its value. Despite recent efforts in various communities to promote jazz though live concert series-and radio spots, its limited audience in America endangers its future as an art form unless steps are taken to preserve it. Without directed assistance, interest in jazz, particularly among our young people, will wane. The objective of this hearing is to find ways to preserve and fund jazz, and we will engage the minds of a talented panel of experts to assist us in this endeavor. With that I will turn it over to our first panel speaker. Please introduce yourself and indicate the organization you represent. |
