Educators' Job Fair proves informative
Recruiters offered pens and stress balls, but what College of Education students really wanted was a job, which is why they milled about the Educators' Job Fair. They sought out opportunities and interviews.
Rio Calabia, who is finishing up her Multiple Subject Credential, was looking for a full-time elementary school job next fall, preferably in the South Bay area.
“I actually think it’s a really good time for teachers,” Calabia said Wednesday. “There are new shifts in education, where they are pushing older teachers to retirement and looking for younger teachers who are familiar with the Common Core and the newer standards (set by the Department of Education).
“So, it’s a great time to be finishing up the credential program and looking for a job.”
As part of Education Week, more than 90 employers from school districts up and the down the state of California set up tables in the USU, along with a private school from Washington, D.C. and one from New Mexico. Students were able to check out public school districts, charter schools, private schools and early start educational centers.
The Peace Corps, Long Beach Police Department and YMCA of Greater Long Beach also handed out information.
Throughout the week, College of Education students had a chance to eat pizza with the dean, get tips on resume writing, attend a mixer and take part in a live Facebook event.
On Thursday, students can attend the UTEACH Meet and Greet at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Anatol Center.
Sponsored by SchoolsFirst Credit Union, the Urban Teacher Academy in a Clinical Home (UTEACH) allows candidates to complete their Multiple Subject Credential Program in a clinical setting. Candidates student teach while completing their methods/pedagogy courses over an entire school year.
Activities continue Friday with sessions on the Long Beach College Promise, graduate programs and information on the teaching profession.
“I’m open to wherever,” said Caitlin Fountin, a Post-Baccalaureate Credential Social Studies student. “I’m looking to possibly getting an interview or information for school districts. I would like to find a job teaching single subject in either middle school or high school.”
