Men’s Track & Field Team Claim the 2019 Big West Championship Title

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The Long Beach State men's program garnered the 2019 Big West Conference Championship title with a total of 169.5 points in an amazing two-week competition. LBSU track & field became the sixth overall Long Beach State team to win the championships this year, as well as the first program in Big West history to win 11 titles.
 
The Beach reclaimed the conference title and lead the field by 18.5 points, while the women's program finished in sixth with 94 points.
 
Long Beach State pole-vaulter, Christian Mueller opened up the day in a big way for the men, garnering a second place finish and season-best clearance of 16-03.75 to contribute seven points for the Beach. Continuing to contribute to the momentum of day one was senior Herman Day, John Broadhead, and sophomore Ryan Coy in the javelin, placing fifth, sixth, and eighth to add on eight points.           
 
That was just a start for the men in the field, as senior Vincent Calhoun claimed the first title of the day in the high jump. In his final conference meet of his career, Calhoun leaped to a clearance of 2.10m (6-10.75), to win the meet. Also in that event was teammates Herman Day and Jackson Potter with fifth and seventh place finishes at 2.00m (6-06.75) and 1.95m (6-04.75).
 
Charlie Vernoy won the discuss throw with an outstanding first attempt to secure the second and final title of the day. The junior unleashed a throw of 54.05m (177-04.00), while teammate Sebastian Coleman followed in third place with a throw of 53.43m (175-03.00). Josh Carr also had a solid performance, finishing sixth and helping contribute a final total of 19 points in the event. In the shot put was senior Tavi Kamarullah, finishing in second with a lifetime-best throw of 17.84m (58-06.05). Kamurallah is currently ranked No.41 in the West Region. Teammate Toa Otine grabbed three points with a sixth place finish, while Carr took eighth place for a point for the men. Senior Blair Robinson was the final LBSU athlete in the field, finishing fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.85m (48-08.75).
 
The Long Beach State's men's sprinters started out with a solid opening performance, finishing third with a time of 41.06. Raleigh Adams made his mark in 110m hurdles, recording the second fastest-time (13.83) in school history. Adams placed second in the event, after competing in only two events this season. The junior also finished sixth in the 400m hurdles, picking up a total of 11 points for the Beach.
 
In a busy second day, Briggs scored in the the 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, 400m, and 200m, tying for the most individual points (23) in the Big West Championships. Briggs ran a personal-best time of 46.59 in the 400m to place second, and ran a PR 21.26 in the 200m to place fourth. Also in the 200m, was team captain Kent Harris in fifth with a PR of 21.30. Harris was a top scorer in the 100m, running a time of 10.61 to finish second in the event. The men's program wrapped up the day with a third place finish and season-best time of 3:10.72 in the 4x400m relay, consisting of (Briggs, Harris, Babieaux, Winters).
 
Out on the track for the women, Courtne' Davis had a big day, winning both the 100 and 200 meters. The senior closed out her final season with a bang bringing in an individual total of 20 points, and clocking a time of 11.47 and 23.45. Also in both events was teammate Azaria Hill, making a name for herself in the 100m with a third place finish and time of 11.77 and new PR of 24.11.
 
Another outstanding performance for the women was senior Skylin Harbin. Harbin earned a spot on the podium with a third placed finish in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles, recording personal-best times of 13.77 and 58.83. The seniors 400m hurdle time is currently No. 21 in the West Region.
 
In the field, De'Ondra Young opened up the day with an outstanding throw of 58.58m (195-05.00) to finish in second place. Young was just off the winning throw by an inch in the competition. Also in the field was teammates Erykah McNairy, Amanda Truong, and Crystal Rodriguez with fifth, seventh, and eighth place finishes. Freshman Malia Talavou placed eighth in the shot-put, grabbing a point for the Beach.
 
In two weeks, over 15 qualifying athletes will participate in the NCAA West Regionals from May 23 to May 25 in Sacramento.
