Greg Donovetsky (Oboe, Music Education) is a native of Los Angeles, California and a graduate of the Juilliard School where he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees and was a student of Harold Gomberg. He has an extensive background in both performance and teaching. He has served as principal oboist for the New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, and Portland symphonies as well as the Virginia Opera and the Joffery Ballet. He has also performed with the New York City, Royal, and Stuttgart Ballets as well as numerous motion picture soundtracks and has recorded on such labels as Nonesuch, Polygram, Orion, and Bay Cities.
As an educator he has been on the faculty of Penn State and Old Dominion, Bucknell Universities, and most recently teaching Music Appreciation at Los Angeles Southwest College. Since coming to Cal State Long Beach in 1980 he has taught Oboe as well as music appreciation, musicianship, instrumental methods, and a course in music fundamentals called Exploring Music for which he has recently written and published the text which contains several original songs and a listening tape. Student groups have performed some of his works in concert. In the area of Music appreciation he has been a co editor for the sixth edition of the teachers guide for The Enjoyment of Music published by Norton Books.
In performance he recently recorded a solo CD for Bay Cities Records called Winters Past, American Music for Oboe. It has received critical acclaim and was featured on NPR's Music in America program. Most recently he was featured on a CD on Camberia Records playing a work for Oboe and strings with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
