Justus Matthews is Professor of Theory and Composition at CSULB and director of the New Music Ensemble. He received both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from CSU Northridge, where he studied composition with Gerald Strand and Aurelio de la Vega, and a Ph.D in Composition from SUNY Buffalo, continuing his studies with Lejaren Hiller.
His music, which includes works written for various vocal and instrumental media, theater, and several pieces for the electronic medium, has been performed in the United States as well as Europe. He has also written music and designed sound for theater companies throughout Southern California.
As a clarinetist he has performed both as a soloist and ensemble player. He has received several grants and prizes for his works, including Drama-Logue Critics Awards and a Robby Award for his original music and sound designs.
