Campus Climate Discussion Set for Wednesday, April 6

The Campus Climate Committee and Associated Students, Inc. at CSULB will sponsor a diversity discussion titled “Campus Comm-Unity: The Evolution of Inclusion” on Wednesday, April 6, from 8 a.m. to noon, in the University Student Union (Ballrooms A-C).

Intended for students, faculty and staff, the event is an opportunity for members of the campus community to discuss their experiences and perceptions of diversity and inclusion at Cal State Long Beach.

Rather than organize a traditional panel, the planning committee for the event has designed a “fishbowl” format. The fishbowl is an opportunity for eight to 10 individuals (students, faculty and staff) to have an honest dialogue about diversity and inclusion on the campus. It's called a “fishbowl” because the dialogue will be observed by all those in attendance. James Sauceda, director of CSULB's Multicultural Center, will facilitate this initial session.

The fishbowl format will set the context for the community to subsequently meet in small breakout groups to engage in a more focused discussion about a specific issue of cultural identity. Participants from the campus community will be able to select the topic based on the broad categories of ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation and disability. A series of questions will be available for the facilitator of each table as a guide for the discussion.

For more information on this event, contact the Multicultural Center at 562/985-8150 or e-mail Sauceda.
