The South Basin Writing Project, directed by English's Ron Strahl since 1989 and aimed at teaching educators about writing, recently received $26,000 from the University of California Regents as part of their outreach program to support what are called the California subject matter projects in writing, reading and literature, social science, international studies, mathematics, science and foreign language.
Frederick Wegener, a member of the CSULB English Department since 1998, continues his 2004 leave through 2005 to research images of medical women in post-Civil War America thanks to a second $50,000 publication grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine.
CSULB's Center for Language Minority Education and Research recently received a contract award of $48,000 from the Inglewood Unified School District to support a year's work at Morningside High School aimed at working with English language learners and closing the student achievement gap.
