Marrow Registration Drive Set for Former CSULB Track Athlete
Brandii Ruiz, a former 400-meter hurdler on the CSULB track and field team, along with her family, is asking the community to be a part of a Marrow Registration Drive on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Alhambra City Hall, not only to save her life, but to help others, where a marrow or blood stem cell transplant could be a cure.
Ruiz competed for the 49ers in 2003 after redshirting in 2002, but had to quit the team last year after developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After a year of treatment, Ruiz was ready to enroll in school, only to have the disease return.
Her father, Alhambra Reserve Sgt. George Ruiz, has spearheaded a Marrow Drive, which will not only take sign ups at 626/570-5177 or 626/570-5146, but monetary donations as well. A 24-hour recorded hotline for more information is at 626/570-5123, while information is also available on the city's Web site at www.cityofalhambra.org/about/Brandii.html. Information can also be sought at www.marrow.org.
