In Memoriam

Kathy Shaon, who served as the executive assistant to the provost, working from 1996-2004 for Karl Anatol and then Gary Reichard, passed away Aug. 18, following a long battle with cancer.

A resident of Long Beach, Shaon was active in many civic organizations including the Junior League. Throughout her battle with cancer, she was an active participant with cancer programs, in particular Breast Cancer Angels, and founded and organized a support group for breast cancer survivors on campus. In addition, she competed in rowing events with the Pink Dragons, a group of cancer survivors, competed, and served on the American Cancer Society's "Reach to Recovery" program.

"Kathy was a role model for behavior in adversity," said Reichard. "She founded and led a support group for breast cancer survivors, canoed with the Pink Dragons, continued on the job with energy and good humor, and stuck steadfastly to her studies, graduating as the Outstanding Graduate in Communication Studies and marching in the 2004 Commencement. She was a steadfast and loyal 49er, and she will be very much missed by her friends across the campus."

In May, Shaon graduated with a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies and she earned the Outstanding Student Award for Communication Studies in Spring 2004. In addition, she received the Staff Community Service Award for 2003-04.

She is survived by her husband Rich Shaon, and her children, Amanda, Michael, and Stacey and her grandchildren, Blake and Aiden.
