Olivia Borba, a junior art major at CSULB, is the most recent recipient of the Dorothy de Araujo Memorial Scholarship, named after the university staff emerita and alumna who died in the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.
The $500 scholarship, awarded by the Staff Emeriti Association, is open to CSULB students whose parents or grandparents are staff employees or staff retirees of CSULB and its auxiliaries. Olivia, the first in her family to attend a university, is the daughter of June Borba, the student service coordinator in Art.
A Long Beach resident and a graduate of Millikan High School, Olivia anticipates graduating in spring 2009 with a B.F.A. in drawing and painting. She currently has a 3.9 grade point average.
“I was delighted to meet some of the members of Staff Emeritus recently at a luncheon,” said Olivia. “Beyond the monetary gift they have bestowed upon me, I appreciate these individuals' generosity of moral support very much. Amazingly, they are sincerely interested in the students even after retirement. With the assistance I have received, I can meet my goal of graduation successfully and on time.”
