The Culture of Design is Being Redefined, Showcased at Oct. 4-5 Conference at Carpenter Center
An international conference titled “5D: The Future of Immersive Design” will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-5 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. The event will explore the profound impact of rapidly changing technologies in design for narrative media — film and television, game design, animation, interactive media, architecture and environment — for artists, designers, scholars, educators, and students.
The definition of narrative media is changing rapidly as traditional storytelling disciplines expand and converge. As a result, a new breed of designer is emerging who can flow freely between the real and the virtual, between media and across cultures.
Presented by the University Art Museum at CSULB and the Art Directors Guild, this international conference assembles the design world’s leading pioneers and academics in an open exchange of ideas and insights about new design processes within the entertainment industry and the delivery of the immersive experience.
The event will be attended by more than 500 award-winning production designers and art directors, visual and digital artists, designers, architects, animators, as well as leading academics in these fields and their students – the future of the industry.
The keynote speaker will be Henry Jenkins, who is regarded as one of the most influential film and media analysts in the world. He is the author and/or editor of nine books on various aspects of media and popular culture, most recently the highly acclaimed, Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide, which examines contemporary trends in the entertainment industry, online culture, and audience participation.
Jenkins has focused on the concept of “media convergence,” arguing that the once hyped technological-focused view was short sighted and that an understanding of how contemporary culture taps into and combines numerous different media sources offers a far richer understanding of the relationship between different media forms. In this respect, he suggests that convergence be understood as a cultural process, rather than a technological end-point.
Additional speakers and panelists who are scheduled include world-renowned film, production and art design leaders Rick Carter, production designer (A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, War of the Worlds, Avatar); Scott Fisher, chair of Interactive Media, School of Cinema and TV, at USC; Peter Frankfurt, co-founder/co-director, Imaginary Forces; Alex McDowell, production designer (Minority Report, Watchmen); Greg Lynn, innovative architect, philosopher and teacher at UCLA’s School of Architecture and Urban Design; John Tarnoff head of show development, DreamWorks Animation; John Underkoffler, founder and chief scientist of Oblong Industries, Gore Verbinski, director (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy); Anne White, visionary brand communications executive; and Habib Zargarpour, senior art director, Electronic Arts LA.
