Atsuko Hayashi, who began teaching Japanese in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies in 2005, died on June 18. She was an expert in second-language acquisition, especially Japanese.
The Long Beach resident earned her B.A. from the University of North Carolina, her M.A. from the University of Oregon at Eugene, her Master of Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, NC, and her Ph.D. in functional linguistics from the University of Oregon in 2002. She served as a lecturer for three years at UC Santa Barbara.“My first reaction to Dr. Hayashi’s passing was disbelief,” said John Tsuchida, Chair of Asian and Asian American Studies. “We held a memorial for her on June 25 in the Japanese Garden. She will be missed.”
