Staff Training and Development Opportunities

Staff Human Resources and University College and Extension Services (UCES) are launching the CSULB Staff Employee Discount Program for UCES Professional Development for non-credit courses and programs. This program entitles CSULB staff employed for six months or more to a 30 percent discount on select UCES Professional Development courses and programs. A list of covered courses / programs as well as more information are available at either Staff Human Resources (Brotman Hall, Room 335, UCES Registration windows (located in the Foundation Building, 1st Floor), or by calling 562/985-5561.

Friday, July 6 / 9-10 a.m.

First Friday for Managers and Supervisors” -- Facilitated by Tom Angell, Director of Staff Human Resources. An informal training session loaded with “need to know” information. Student Health Center, Room 118.

Wednesday, July 11 and Thursday, July 26 / 2-4 p.m.

Understanding Your CalPERS Retirement Benefits” -- This hands-on informational workshop will provide a brief overview of the CalPERS program and an introduction to the CalPERS retirement information available online. Participants will navigate through the CalPERS website, and learn how to access the CalPERS online Retirement Calculator, Service Credit Purchase information, the Annual Member Statement, and other information. Computer access will be available for hands-on learning. Additional topics include benefits at retirement and the process/steps for submitting the CalPERS retirement application. This workshop is highly recommended for employees who meet the CalPERS vesting requirement, but all CalPERS members are welcome to attend. This session will be repeated monthly. “Enhancing Your Interviewing Skills for On-Campus Positions” -- Are you looking to enhance your interview skills for that on campus job? This workshop will provide tips on how to put your best foot forward for on-campus interviews. Join us to learn helpful hints on how to complete your application, create or tune up your resume, sharpen your interview and presentation skills, and learn proper interview attire.

“In's and Out's of the Position Description and Classification Processes” -- This practical workshop was designed to assist managers and staff members in understanding the classification process as well as to assist them in creating and writing a proper position description. The first half of this workshop will be dedicated to a discussion of the classification process, with tips for preparing for classification reviews, and the re-classification and classification appeals process. The second half will be devoted to understanding, creating, and writing an accurate position description. Please bring a copy of a position description you are currently working on, or one you would like to begin working on.

“Support Services Workshop” -- Facilitated by Procurement and Support Services. Everyone is invited to hear updated general information on the following areas: Departmental Copier Program, Mail Services, Materials Management, Procurement Card, University Print Shop, and the Quick Copy Center.
