Comparative Adult Education Around the Globe

Published in 2007 by the Zhejiang University Press based in Hangzhou, China, Comparative Adult Education around the Globe was co-edited with Fordham University’s Prof. Kathleen P. King. Together, the authors reveal previously unseen perspectives of adult learning with chapters that cover Africa, Thailand, the Middle East, Asia, Brazil, Eskimo Hadia, Confucianism, North America and Egypt. The methods include case studies, narratives, explorations, comparative studies and rich multiple perspectives. In addition to the scholars who wrote original chapters for the book, the Paulo Freire Institute also gave permission for a chapter of Paulo Freire’s work to be included. The book offers an opportunity to tour “the constellation of adult learning” and provides a basis for readers to reflect upon the many world communities and to examine practice and perspective to develop personal and professional insight. Comparative Adult Education Around the Globe explores the theory of andragogy, the art and science of helping adults learn. The authors hope the new text will provide much-needed guidance to today’s educational professionals and trainers who are charged with educating today’s adult learners. The text offers a resource that can effectively address issues of international perspectives and interpretations associated with andragogy as well as exploring ways for adult educators in different social settings to more effectively reflect upon and apply theory to practice. The uniqueness of the book already has earned a place in several university Web sites as a source that brings together the work of experts from around the world and to break down theoretical walls. The book has prompted several adult education programs in other universities in the United States to adopt it as a required textbook. Premium universities such as East China Normal University have purchased the book for their doctoral students in adult education. Further, the book can be accessed via the Global Library Network, WorldCat. Together, the authors bring synergy to adult learning and training as well as to the way people look at their worlds and how they think about it.
