Para Named Interim Provost/Senior VP for Academic AffairsPublished: August 3, 2009
Donald J. Para, who has served as the Dean of the College of the Arts at CSULB since July 2001, was recently selected as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, replacing Karen L. Gould who has been appointed president of Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. She will begin her new appointment on Aug. 15.
“Dean Para brings decades of university leadership to the position having served many years as a chair, associate dean and dean,” said President F. King Alexander. “His talents and knowledge of academic affairs will be a great asset as we struggle to address the fiscal challenges created by the state of California.”
Prior to becoming dean, he served a year as associate dean and 12 years as chair in the Department of Music at CSULB. Before coming to the university, he served as chair of the Department of Music at Cal State Los Angeles and, for 15 years before that, was on the faculty at Western Michigan University, serving the last five years as assistant director of the School of Music.
Para received his B.M. in Music Education and a M.M. in Music Composition from WMU and his Ph.D. in Music Composition from Michigan State University. His teaching areas are music theory, musicianship and composition. Several of his compositions, which include works for chamber ensembles, large instrumental and vocal ensembles, chamber opera, theater and the electronic medium, have been supported by various granting agencies.
Para has presented papers and given presentations at various meetings of arts education organizations, music theory conferences and to community arts boards. Topics have included time management, arts advocacy, faculty post-tenure review, and managing change in an academic environment.
He has served the National Association of Schools of Music as chair of Region One (1994-97) and as an accreditation evaluator for National Association of Schools of Music. He has also been the Director of Seminars for New Department Chairs for the Colleges of Arts and Sciences (2008-09). In addition to his academic duties at the university, Para serves as a director on the boards of KKJZ and the Arts Council for Long Beach.
