Dorothy de Araujo Memorial Scholarship Winner AnnouncedPublished: June 15, 2009
Shauna Followell, a business administration major at CSULB, is the recipient of the Dorothy de Araujo Memorial Scholarship, named after the university staff emerita and alumna who died in the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, while flying home to California from Boston.
The $1,000 scholarship, awarded by the Staff Emeriti Association with financial support from the Schools First Federal Credit Union, is open to CSULB students whose parents or grandparents are staff employees or staff retirees of CSULB and its auxiliaries.
Followell, a sophomore, is the daughter of Coleen Followell, a 12-year CSULB employee who currently works in the Office of the President.
“I am deeply honored and touched to be awarded this meaningful scholarship,” said Followell, a 2008 graduate of Long Beach’s Wilson High School. “As the daughter of a long-time staff member, I have grown up on this campus. Not only have I attended CSULB summer camps over the years, but I have worked on campus and currently live here, too. I am grateful for the opportunities this award will further provide me, and I look forward to giving back to the campus that has given me so much.”
While in high school, Followell worked part-time in an office and determined she liked that environment. “I have decided to pursue a career in finance or another area of business where I can put my strengths to work and still do something I enjoy,” said the President’s Scholar. “CSULB is the perfect place to expand my education and I could not have picked a better place to study.”
Her extracurricular activities include the Housing Community Service Committee, Movement for a Better World, beach clean-ups and the Homeless Drop-in Center.
The scholarship will help pay for her books and other college expenses.
