Facilities Management’s Garcia Named Employee of the Month

Published: October 13, 2008

Victoria Garcia, who joined CSULB in October 2003, was selected recently by her peers in Facilities Management as employee of the month.

The 25-year Long Beach resident was recognized in a special ceremony held on Friendship Walk near the University Student Union. The walk was named Victoria Garcia Lane.

President F. King Alexander applauded Garcia’s selection. “Victoria always takes the initiative to start and follow through on all of the tasks assigned to her,” he said. “Her co-workers have noted her as being very dedicated to her job and being a good team player. Victoria has a passion for her job and a high commitment to quality. She is always being commended for the high quality of her work.”

“It feels good to be named employee of the month,” said Garcia, who joined CSULB as a temporary custodian and who attained her permanent appointment in 2007. Garcia thinks one reason for her recognition is her cheerful attitude. “I’m friendly,” she said. “I get along with everyone and everyone seems to know me by name. When I go on vacation, people ask where I’ve gone. This is a friendly place to work.”

Garcia is glad she chose CSULB. “I like where it is and I like the benefits,” she said. “I like my work and I like this place. Also, my supervisors are very nice people.”

Her responsibilities as a custodian include cleaning offices throughout Brotman Hall, including the President’s Office. “I clean the President’s Office every day and I even do windows,” she said. “I make sure the restrooms and offices have supplies. And I do this every morning beginning at 3 a.m.”

Garcia likes the campus in the early morning. “It’s very quiet,” she said. “Because there are so few people, I get my job done quickly.”

Garcia also enjoys the opportunity to work with young people. “Everyone talks to me,” she said. “I greet the boys and girls on their way to class every morning and they ask about me. And, if they need directions, they ask me that, too.”

When she isn’t keeping CSULB clean, Garcia enjoys gardening and spending time with her six children and 15 grandchildren. “I also enjoy staying healthy by visiting the gym,” she said.

Garcia received several gifts with her recognition including a CSULB sweatshirt, a $25 gift certificate to Domenico’s Italian Restaurant, a gift certificate for four to one CSULB home game for the sport of her choice, a $20 gift certificate for Heritage Family Pantry, a coupon for one Tommy’s World Famous Hamburger and a coupon for one Whopper at Burger King.
