Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation Presents CheckPublished: March 17, 2014
The Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation (LBRSF) presented a $206,750 check to CSULB officials at center court of the Walter Pyramid on Feb. 27 during the 49er men’s basketball game against the University of Hawaii.
The check represented 134 student scholarships funded by the foundation during the 2013-14 school year. Scholarship recipients were invited to join the dignitaries on the court and participate in the check presentation.
“The Long Beach Rotary Scholarship Foundation has been a proud sponsor of local college scholarships at both CSULB and Long Beach City College for close to 50 years,” said LBRSF Chair Craig Dougherty. “Through the generosity of our Rotarians and careful fiscal forethought, we look forward to continuing to help qualified students in our community for years to come.”
Prior to the basketball game, Rotary members held a reception at The Pointe to honor this year’s recipients. Each year at CSULB, the LBRSF supports four President’s Scholars and more than 100 traditional scholarship students who receive an annual $1,500 scholarship.
“The Long Beach Rotary and CSULB are partners in embracing a commitment to student achievement,” said CSULB Interim President Donald Para. “Ultimately, it’s not just our students who benefit. It is the greater Long Beach community that will be the beneficiaries of this generous gift from the Rotary Scholarship Foundation.”
Founded in 1917, Long Beach Rotary is the largest and oldest service organization in Long Beach. Rotary also sponsors a service club for students on campus, called the Rotaract Club.
Long Beach Rotary scholarships are available to students from Long Beach area high schools who attend Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach.
