Hyowon Ban, Geography, made a presentation titled “Motion Analyses and Visualization of Dances” at the Association of American Geographers national meeting held in Los Angeles in April.

Norman Carter, Geography, gave a presentation, “A Shortage of Housing? In This Economy?” at the Association of American Geographers national meeting held in Los Angeles in April.

Lesley Farmer, Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling, has been chosen to serve on the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Advisory Board.

Christine Jocoy and graduate student Abel Santana, Geography, gave a paper at the Association of American Geographers national meeting held in Los Angeles in April. The paper was titled “Main Street Medicine: Applying Field Data Collection and GIS Analytics to Improve Services to the Homeless Population in Long Beach, California.”

Maulana Karenga, Africana Studies, gave a series of Kwanzaa lectures titled “Kwanzaa, Us and the Well-being of the World: A Courageous Questioning” at Buffalo Kwanzaa Committee, Buffalo, N.Y., Dec. 27; Capitol City Kwanzaa Fest, Richmond, Va., Dec. 28; the National Association of Kawaida Organizations, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Kwanzaa Unity Community Center, Philadelphia. He also lectured on “Haiti and the Weapon of Will: Conceding No Ground Gained” at the African American Cultural Center, Los Angeles, Jan. 27. Moreover, he gave a series of Black History Month keynote lectures titled “Advancing Black and Human History: Holding Ground in Contemporary Times” at the University of Cincinnati, Feb. 1, and at Florida A & M University (FAMU), Tallahassee, Feb. 14; a special President’s Day lecture titled “Situating Obama in Black History: Issues of Community, Culture and Struggle” at CSU Northridge, Feb. 18; and “Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and the Moral Vocation of Leadership: The Model and Mission of Dr. Shirley Weber” at San Diego State University, Feb. 19. He also received the distinguished Black History Month Convocation Keynote Speaker Award and did an archival interview at FAMU and received an award from CSUN for leadership, scholarship and service. He also published a two-part article titled “Creating and Killing Christopher Dorner: An American Saga and Sign,” Los Angeles Sentinel, Feb. 21/28.

Unna I. Lassiter, Geography, presented “Social Entrepreneurship and Cultural Production: a Case Study of Sri Lanka” at the Association of American Geographers national meeting held in Los Angeles in April.

Christine Rodrigue, Geography, published a refereed article “Constructing All-Year Floristic Keys for Small Areas” in Fremontia: Journal of the Native Plant Society in April 2013.

Dmitrii Sidorov, Geography, gave a presentation titled “Changing Russian Orthodox Landscape in Post-Soviet Moscow” at the Association of American Geographers national meeting held in Los Angeles in April.

Deborah Thien, Geography, gave a presentation titled “Trauma, Militarized” at the Association of American Geographers annual meeting at the Association of American Geographers national meeting held in Los Angeles in April.
