OLLI To Hold 8th Annual Visual Arts Show From Feb. 18-22

Published: February 15, 2013

The CSULB Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will hold its eighth Annual Visual and Performing Arts Program from Monday, Feb. 18, through Friday, Feb. 22, in the Duncan Anderson Gallery of the Design Building (DESN) at the southeast side of campus. The exhibit will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The show will feature art work created by OLLI members in mediums ranging from oil, acrylics, watercolor and pastels to photography, needlework, papier-mache and carvings. Design Department professors and instructors are invited to submit an individual piece of art for display.

Following the art show, a reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. Featuring an Irish theme, the program will include presentations and performances by OLLI members Bill Fitzpatrick, who will provide a brief historic background on Ireland, and Ralph Staunton, who will lead the audience in singing classic Irish tunes accompanied by guest harpist Anne Ryder. OLLI will also honor 100-year-old Otto Ross, who will read one of his poems. The Recorder Orchestra and the Memoir Class will provide additional entertainment. The new LifeFit Center @ The Beach program will also stage a demonstration.

Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. Free parking for the Feb. 24 reception will be available in CSULB campus lot 9, located on Palo Verde Avenue.

“The art show is a chance for seniors to display their work in a gallery,” said Betty Hutchens, director of the OLLI art exhibit. “How many amateurs get that chance? It is a fun thing that we enjoy and a lot of the OLLI student body does, too. The Sunday afternoon reception and program is a nice social time for OLLI members and friends as well. They mingle and visit as they look at the art and then sit back for an entertainment program put on by their friends.”

“This art exhibit is one of the highlights of the year for OLLI members and friends, and an opportunity for young students on campus to appreciate the talents and enthusiasm of an older generation,” said Barbara White, OLLI’s executive director. “We are always grateful that the Design Department opens their gallery to us each year and that their faculty exhibit works as well.”

OLLI members who wish to enter their artwork in the show must submit their application and artwork on Friday, Feb. 15. All paint and photo entries must be framed and ready to hang. Free-standing arts and crafts are also accepted for consideration. Submission applications can be obtained from the OLLI office. For more information, contact Betty F. Hutchens, OLLI art gallery director, at bfhutchens@verizon.net or 562/355-2105.
