ITS’s Nguyen Honored, Happy With Recognition As Top Employee

Published: November 14, 2011

Liem Nguyen, an operating systems analyst in Information Technology Services, was named recently by his coworkers as employee of the month.

“I’m pleased to be recognized,” said Nguyen, a U.S. Navy veteran and member of CSULB’s class of 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems. “I feel honored and happy to be recognized. There are a lot of hard-working people in this department and I just feel glad to be nominated among so many deserving people.”

CSULB President F. King Alexander praised Nguyen for his commitment to the university.

“Liem has been heavily involved in the exchange migration and identity management projects with limited resources since the beginning,” he said. “He has worked long hours including holidays and weekends and has helped to make these projects successful. Liem always has a positive attitude and is always willing to stop what he’s doing to help others understand his technical world.”

As an ITS operating systems analyst, Nguyen deals with every attempt to log in to Beach Board or MyCSULB through his responsibility for the LDAP authentication system. When a student or staff member logs on to a system like MyCSULB with a user name and password, that information goes before the LDAP system which checks the credential to see if the log-in is valid.

A typical day for Nguyen often begins with a student’s or staff member’s call that they cannot access their system thanks to an identification problem. “It’s up to me to figure out why the student, faculty or staff member cannot get into the system,” he explained.

Nguyen began his career at CSULB in 2000 as an Equipment Systems Specialist in Academic Computing Services. He remembers returning to campus, after receiving his degree, for the good working environment he had found there. In 2006, Nguyen accepted a position in Information Technology Services as an operating system analyst.

“I’m glad I made the move to ITS because it gave me the opportunity to expand my horizon,” he said. “It was tough at the beginning, but I enjoy the challenge of working with so many talented people.”

When he isn’t rescuing the campus from computer meltdown, Nguyen enjoys the occasional game of racquetball and mountain biking. The Westminster resident bikes to campus the 10 miles to and from his home daily.

Nguyen’s professional goal is to keep pace with the fast-changing technology. “I want to keep up with those changes,” he said. “I want to stay current year to year.”

Nguyen is glad he made the choice to join CSULB and encourages others considering a university career to do the same. “I’m especially glad I chose CSULB because I found such a good working environment here,” he said.

Nguyen received several gifts with his distinction including a CSULB sweatshirt, a $25 gift card for PF Chang’s, one large pizza from Me-n-Ed’s Pizza Parlor, a coupon for Tommy’s world Famous Hamburgers and one free Whopper from Burger King.
