Health Care Benefits Open Enrollment Closes Nov. 4

The open enrollment period for any changes to health, dental, flexcash, certain voluntary benefits and enrollment/re-enrollment in the dependent care and health care reimbursement account plans will run through Friday, Nov. 4. Changes made during this period will be effective Jan. 1, 2012.

Because of CalPERS and other state restrictions, requests received after Nov. 4 will not be accepted. It’s important to note that the dependent and health care reimbursement plans require re-enrollment every year, even if an employee wishes to continue the same contribution amount. Current participants must complete a new enrollment form annually.

The CSU is pleased to announce the implementation of a Flexible Spending Plan (FSA) debit card to Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA) enrollees, beginning in the 2012 plan year. The optional “FSA Benny Card” issued by ASIFlex, allows HCRA enrollees to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses (i.e., health, dental, vision, etc.) when issued as payment at health care providers and at certain retail locations that have implemented an inventory control system, per IRS regulations.

Please review your plans carefully as premium rates and co-payments are subject to change. If you did not receive information from CalPERS regarding open enrollment, information is available in Benefits Services.

As a reminder, a Social Security Number (SSN) is required for any individual(s) enrolled in a CalPERS health plan, CSU dental and/or vision plan as the dependent of a benefits eligible employee. This policy is applicable to new hires and existing employees. If an employee selects coverage for his/her dependent(s) during open enrollment and does not provide a valid Social Security Number(s) for the dependent(s) the open enrollment request will not be processed until proper documentation is provided. If the dependent is deemed ineligible to qualify for a Social Security Number, the employee must provide documentation of this information.

With regard to adding newborn dependents, it is understood that it takes considerable time for the Social Security Administration to issue a child’s SSN. However, once the SSN is obtained (typically within 6-12 weeks of birth) it must be provided to Benefits Services. For those employees who are unwilling to provide this information, benefits for affected dependents will be terminated. If you have a dependent who is/is not currently on your benefits and you want to delete/add them, then the open enrollment period is your opportunity to do so.
