23rd Annual Campus Couture Fashion Show On May 13Published: May 2, 2011
Some 200 original garments designed, constructed, and modeled by students at CSULB will be featured at the 23rd annual Campus Couture Fashion Show on Friday, May 14, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.
The annual fashion show highlights the work of some 50 textile and clothing majors in the CSULB Fashion Merchandising and Design Department. While design students create the garments, merchandising students participate in the fundraising and production of the show.
This year’s show coordinators are CSULB Fashion Merchandising and Design students Madeleine Roell, Jennifer Backoff, Christina Sandler, Rosy Rivas and Kelsey Lovatto. Campus Couture is one of the largest events the campus hosts each year. Planning and fundraising begins a year in advance in order for the students to have the opportunity to show their designs.
A highlight for participating student designers is that the show is judged by influential fashion industry professionals. Among this year’s judges will be Jason Peskin, founder and CEO of Project Ethos; Ainsley Cohen of Showroom 907; Diana Ramos, public relations director for Bloomingdale’s; and Kyle Shafer, a member of the design team for Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s contemporary clothing line Elizabeth and James.
“This is an opportunity for students to present their vision to the world of fashion,” explained Suzanne Marshall, director of CSULB’s Fashion Merchandising and Design Program and the faculty advisor who works with the coordinators on the show throughout the year. “This year’s coordinators are looking forward to putting on the most professional runway show yet by utilizing unique lighting effects, staging, music and choreography.”
