‘Equal Pay Day’ Panel DiscussionPublished: April 1, 2011
CSULB and the Long Beach branch of the American Association for University Women (AAUW) are jointly sponsoring a panel discussion on “Equal Pay Day” on Tuesday, April 12, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in The Pointe of The Walter Pyramid at CSULB.
Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men’s and women’s wages.
Focusing on the inequity of earned pay for women compared to their male counterparts, the panel discussion will be moderated by Long Beach City Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske (5th District). The event is free and open to the public.
“We are very excited to be holding the first Equal Pay Day Event on campus. We have had great support from campus groups, as well as the local and national AAUW,” said Mary Ann Takemoto, CSULB’s associate vice president for student services. “The Paycheck Fairness Act, a comprehensive piece of fair pay legislation, was defeated in 2010 by the Senate, so there is still a lot of work for us to do.”
Among the panelists scheduled to take part in the discussion are CSULB Economics Professor Alejandra Cox Edwards; Carlynne McDonnell, president, Change in Our Lifetimes and leadership development director for AAUW – California; and Pat Lynch, president of Business Alignment Strategies Inc.
A study by the AAUW examined how the wage gap affects college graduates. Wage disparities kick in shortly after college graduation, when women and men should, absent discrimination, be on a level playing field. One year after graduating college, women are paid on average only 80 percent of their male counterparts’ wages, and during the next 10 years, women’s wages fall even further behind, dropping to only 69 percent of men’s earnings 10 years after college.
“The issue of pay equity is not just a women’s issue, it is an issue that affects families and men, as well,” Takemoto pointed out. “We hope that men will participate in our program and learn more about the issues.”
Other sponsors of the event include the AAUW National Legal Advocacy Fund and several CSULB groups — President’s Commission on the Status of Women, Office of Equity and Diversity, Women’s Resource Center, University Ombuds Office, Human Resources Management Association, the Career Development Center, Division of Student Services and Associated Students Inc.
Those who plan to attend are encouraged to use the Merriam Way entrance to the campus, just off East Atherton Street, and should park in lots 13 or 14, which are adjacent to The Walter Pyramid. Campus parking permits are $5 and can be purchased at the yellow machines in Lot 14.
